For publishing at ATHENS, in the State of Gear,

ATHENEUM.
IN a community of Freemen, and where a
disposition to patronise Literature and Sci
ence is extensively manifested, the importance
of a well conducted Newspaper, must, if ne
cessity, be generally understood; and among
a reading people, such a paper can hardly fail
of being acceptable That the Atl.eneuin will

be deemed presumptuous to assert.; hut so far
as the efforts of the Editor can render it useful,

As an editor it will be his interest -as it wili
be, under all circumstances, his inclination—

It wifi scarcely be necessary to sav, that the
political complexion of the Atheneum will be
Republican- In this age oflight and knowledge,
and in this country, none other ought to ask, or
could be expected to receive, public patron
age.
’ CONDITIONS.
The Atheneum will bepublishedonce a week,
on a super-royal sheet,and delivered to subscri
bers or forwarded by mail, at Three Dollars a
year, payable in advance, or Four Dollars, it
payment is deferred to the end of the year.
All subscriptions will be for one year at lea t,
and till a discontinuance is directed. No paper
discontinued, except at the option ot the editor,
until all dues are paid.
Advertisements will be inserted at the usual
rates.
(Tj’Persons disposed to encourage the under
taking, are requested to signify the ame by
the first of September, as it is contemplated to
issue the first number earlv in that month.

Travelling fr. North to South
FROM four to six new. comfortably constnu
ed four wheel vehicles, drawn by four
horses, each and driven by sober and careful
drivers, will set out from frenton in New-Jer
,ey to Savannah via Augusta in Georgia, on or
about the 15th of September next. The route
through Pennsylvania, Virginia and the Caroh
nas, will be confined as much to the neighbor
hood of the mountains, as the good roads thro’
the country will allow. The journey will be
leisurely taken, so as to consume from tour to
five or even six weeks, dependent somewhat on
the inch ation of the persons who may become
passengers.
Those who are disposed to engage seats lor
the above described journey, can do so by ap
plying to the Post-master at Savannah. Prior
ity in the choice of seats will he regulated by
numbering the first applicant one, which will
entitle that person to the first selection, and so
on to the last. An entire carriage can be taken
up by engaging the number of seats.
