i second notice of Mr. Christie's, who lias
iiibtedlv claims against th in, which, when

The deeds under which Mr. Christie claims an

justice.
The Trustees under the late deeds are anxious,

PROPOSALS,
For publishing at . / TUFA’S, in the State of Geor

ATHivMUM.
IX a community of Freemen, and where a
disposition to patronise Literature and Sci
ence is extensively manifested, the importance
ol a well.conducted Newspaper, must, of ne
cessity, be generally understood; anil among
a reading people, such a paper can hardly fail
of being acceptable. That the Ati.eneum will?
he a paper ot this description, it might perhaps f
he deemed presumptuous to assert; but so far
as the efforts of the Editor can render it useful,
so far as persevering industry and attention can
insure success to his undertaking—so far, at
least, the subscriber can pledge himself, that
he wilt endeavor to render his paper worth
The growing importance of Athens, where
the nourishing University of the State is loca
ted, and surrounded, as it is, by an intelligent
and wealthy neighborhood, has induced a belief
that no place in the upper country presented a
more inviting opening for the establishing a
new weekly paper—and the influence of this
opinion has led to the present proposals, and
the subscriber flatters himself, that, in the lib
eral patronage of an enlightened community,
his under.aking will receive an approving sanc
tion. And w hile his own exertions will be per
severingly employed to furnish a paper which
shall be useful to h'l3 supporters, he will ven
ture to hope that his columns may be diversified
by the occasional communicationsofsuch scien
tific and literary friends as may be disposed,
through thi3 medium, to aid him, and benefit
the community.
To make his paper useful, will be the propri
etor’s principal aim ; and in the furtherance of
tins object, he will endeavor to give the earliest
Foreign and Domestic Intelligence, with such
portions of Congressional matter, when the Na
tional Legislature are in session, as his limits
will allow—together with such original or se
lected Political Communications, or Moral Es
says as have the public good in view, and are
free from personalities.: but to articles intended
merely to gratify revengeful feelings, and to
provbke or continue personal contests, no place
will be given. And though tn judging of these
the editor may occasionally err, it is to be ho
ped that no improper motives may be supposed
to influence his decision, inasmuch as the right
of rejecting, as well iis of inserting communica
tions’, must be reserved to himself.
As an editor it will be his interest —as it will
he, under all circumstances, his inclination—
to give general satisfaction. From the line of
impartial duty, he will endeavor not to depart;
and none shall have cause to accuse him of vol
untarilv giving a needless offence to a single in
dividual.
It will scarcely he necessary to say, that the
political complexion of the Atheueum will he
Republican. In tins age of light and-knov'ledge,
and in this country, none other ought to ask, or
could be expected to receive, public patron
age.
CONDITIONS.
The Atbeneum will be published once a w’eek,
on a super-royal sheet,and delivered to subscri
bers, or forwarded by mail, at Three Dollars a
year, payable in advance, or Four Dollars, it
payment is deferred to the end of the year.
All subscriptions will be for one year at leant,
and till a discontinuance is directed. No paper
discontinued, except at the option of the editor,
until all dues are paid.
Advertisements will be Inserted at the usual
rates.
(Xj’Persons disposed to encourage the under
taking, are requested to signify the same by
