public the following
PROPOSALS,
Bor publishing at ATHENS, in the State of Geor.
giu, a new weekly pupa-, to be be entitled the
ATHKNEUM.
IN a community of Freemen, and where a
disposition to patronise Literature and Sci
ence is extensively manifested, the importance
ot a well conducted Newspaper, must, of ne
cessily, be generally understood ; aud among
h reading people, such a paper can hardly fail
of being acceptable That the Atl.eneum w ill
be a paper of this description, it might perhaps
be deemed presumptuous to assert; hut so far
as the efforts of the Editor can render it useful,
so far as persevering industry and attention can
insuft success to’ his undertaking—so far, at
least, the subscriber can pledge himself, ihat
he v ill endeavor to render Ids paper worth
The growing importance of Athens, where
the nourishing Uo versity of the State is loca
ted, and surrounded, as it is, by an intelligent
and wealthy neigliborhood, has induced a belief
that no place in the upper country presented a
more inviting opening for the’ establishing a
new weekly paper—and the influence of this
opinion has led to the present proposals, and
the subscriber flatters himseltj that, in the lib
eral patronage of an enlightened community,
Ins undertaking will r c< ive an approving sanc
tion And while his own exertions will be j er
severingly employed to furnish a paper which
shall be useful to his supporters, he will ven
ture to hope that hisciiliiiiins may be diversified
bv the occasional communications of such s> icn
’ i lie and literary friends as may be disj used,
through this medium, to aid him, and benefit
the community.
To make his paper useful, will be the propri
etor’s principal aim ; and in the furtherance of
thisobject, he will endeavor to give the -at dot
Foreign and Domestic Intelligence, with such
portions of Congressional mater, when the Na
tional Legislature are ir> session, ar. lus limits
nil) allow—together with such original or se■
dieted Political Communications, or Moral Ks
says as have the public good in sieu, and are
tree from personali’ies : but Vo articles intended
merely to gratify revengeful feelings, and to
rovoke or continue personal contests, no place
will be given. And though in judging of these
the editor may occasionally err, it is to he ho
ped that no improper mo'ives may be supposed
to influence his decision, inasmuch as the right
of rejecting, as well as of inserting Communica
tions, must be reserved to himseif.
As an editor it will be his interest—as it will
be, under all circumstances, his inclination—
to give general satisfaction. Prom the line of
impartial duty, he will endeavor noi to depart ;
and none shall have cause tu accuse him f vol
untarily giving a needless offence to a single in
dividual.
It will scarcely be necessary to fay, that the
political complexion of the Atheuenm will be’
Republican. In this age of light and knowledge,
and in this country, none other ought to ask, or
could be expected to receive, public patron
age.
CONDITIONS.
The Athencum will be published once a week,
on a super-royal sheet, and delivered to subscri
bers. or forwarded by mail, at Three Dollars a
vear, parable in advance, or Four Dollars, if
payment is deferred to the end ofthe year.
All subscriptions will be for one year ai lea A.
and till a discontinuance is directed. No papei
discontinued, except at the option of the editor,
until all dues are paid.
Advertisements will be inserted at the usual
rates.
(Tj’Persons disposed to encourage the under
taking, are requested to signify the s.4me by
