It is said by manufactured and millers in and .

impossible to prosecute their business with the
little water that runs in their streams.

Oilgas.—We understand that it is in agitation
to form a company in this town, for the j urpesi

I INFORMATION TO NAVIGATORS.
J Extract from the Log-Book of the schr. Eliza, ar
rived at Boston. ,
Thursday, Aug 8,1822. Blustering but fair
weather, Wind N F. bv E. At 530 P M made
Gav Head, NEby NNo th-rly. At 8 tacked to
Eastward in 19 fathoms, coarse sand. Gay Hea.
NF, by N about G leagues. At 9V M saw Gay
Head Light, N N E steered F S E 4 E 36 miles,
and deepened the water to 5 and 30 fathoms—
tlien E 21 mib sand shoaled the water gradually.
A’ noon in lat 40 44. dei F had 12 fathoms, fine
white sand. This I took to be the pitch of the
South Shoal of Nantucket; especiallv as I soon
deepened the water to 17,20,95 and 26fathoms,
and had coarser bottom with broken shells iffid
gravel
Notwithstanding that I was 2 miles Northward
; of the reported latitude of the South Shoal, yet
;1 could see no Shoal or breakers from aloft. From
I this position ‘ steered East 12 miles, E N F. 4 de
and N F. 4 de. and at midnight bad 26 fathoms,
grave!. It was now quite calm. Headed NE.
! At half past 12, we heard a roaring ahead—“like
: >he sound of many waters”—were at a loss to
1 know hat it was—had 13 fathoms water and
found the tide setting us towards it, (about N El
;2 do per hour. W ere on this ripple in about 2
or 3 minutes, and as soon over it Had 7 fathoms
‘mi i<: it was not more than fifty yards wide; the
! sea braked and combed on it at a great rate
The tide was running over it with rapidity, to die
N !v tit” roaring w as distinctly heard at the dis
! tance of a mile after we had passed it. The wa
; ter deepened very quick after w r e had passed it,
to 17 and to 27 fathoms, coarse bottom, gravel
and prble stones.
I do not find this fiipple represented on any of!
our ’■ liar l S; its latitude, as nearasl could ascer
tain it, is 43 48, F about 6 leagues E by N from the j
reputed position of the Sou'll Shoal. I do not i
believe it dangerous, but have no doubt, that it
has been often taken for the South Shoal, as in
blustering weather, no doubt it must break very
boisterously Tile weatliercontinued nearly calm,
and the next at noon, l was in lat 40 53 46 a 42
fathoms coarse sand and smaH stones.
