informal, unjust and illegal. Hence they have
been brought and are still before the court, ami
other deeds have been executed and recorded,
conveying the prone- tv for the use or ail their
Creditors, Mr. Christie included, without any
trust or reservation beneficial to C. & M or their
families, and if this be not agreeable to that
gentleman, it must nevertheless appear tairaml |
equitable to the public and all who have a sense

The Trustees under the late deeds are anxious
to sell the lands in Florida, alluded to ill the no
tice of Mr. Christie, and to apply the proceeds,
to the immediate payment ol part of his de
mand, and deposit a sufficiency therein to covers

—but his opposition to anjMreasonable sale,.as

gw, a neso week !$ paper, to be be entitled the
athuneum.
IN a community bf Freemen, and where a
disposition to patronise Literature and Sen
ence is extensively manifested, the imp.ortance
ot a well conducted Newspaper, must, cf ne
cessity, be generally understood; and among
a reading people, such a paper ran hardly fail
of being acceptable That the AtLeneum wilL
be a paper of this description, it might perhaps |
be deemed presumptuous to assert; but so far
as the efforts of the Editor can render it useful,
so far as persevering industry and attention can
insure success to lus undertaking—so far, at
least, the subscriber can pledge himself, that
lies will endeavor to render l.is paper worth
, The growing importance of Athens, where
the flourishing University of the State is loca
ted, and surrounded, as it is, by an intelligent
and wealthy neighborhood, lias induced a belief
that no place in the upper country presented a
more inviting opening for (be establishing a
new weekly paper—and the influence of this
opinion has led to the present proposals, and
the subscriber flatters himself, that, in the lib
era! patronage of an enlightened community,
Ins undertaking will rt ceivc.au approving sanc
tion. _ And while his own-exertions will be ptr
severingly employed to furnish a paper wlfiyli
shall be useful to his supporters, be will ven
ture to hope that hiscohftnns may be diversified
by the occasional communications of such scien
tific and literary friends as may be disposed,
through this medium, to aid him, and benefit
the community.
To make his paper useful, will be the propri
etor’s principal aim ; ami in the furtherance of
this object, lie will endeavor to give the earliest
Foreign and Domestic Intelligence, with such
portions of Congressional mat er, when the Na
tional Legislature are in session, as his limits
will allow—together with such original or se
lected Political Communicaiions, or Moral Es
says as have the public good in view, and are
fi t'? from personalities : but to articles intended
merely to •.'.■•a'ifv revengeful feelings, and to
■novoke or Coi.tif lie personal contests, no place
will be given. And though in judging of these
tbs editor may occasionally’ err, it is to be ho
ped that no improper motives may be supposed
to influence his decision, inasmuch as the right
cf rejecting, a> well as of inserting commutiica- ,
turns, roust i>e reserved to himself.
As an editor it will l> his interest —as it will
lie, under ad circumstances, his inclination —
to give general satisfaction From the line of
impartial duty, be will endeavor not to depart;
and none shall have cause to accuse him -f vol
untary v giving a needless offence to a single in
dividual.
It will scarcely be necessary to say,that the
political comr.lexion of the Athenetim will bit
Republican In this age of light and knovdedge,
and in this country t hone other ought to ask, or
could be expected to receive, public patron-
CONDITIONS.
The Athenetim will be published once a week,
on a super-royal sheet,and delivered to subscri
bers. or fontarded by mai*, at Three Dollars a
vear, payable in advance, or Four Dollars, il
payment is deferred to the end of the year.
All subscriptions will be for one year at lea t,
and till a discontinuance is directed. No paper
discontinued, except at the option of the editor,
until all dues are paid. _

rrj-Persons disposed to encourage the under
taking, are requested to signify the same by
the first of September, as it is contc mplated to
issue the first number early in that month.

property of Mr. VVm. Joyner. The tract consists
of 1190 acres, 200 of which are cleared and im
proved with the ordinary Planiation Houses—
There are about 800 acres of first quality tide
land, suitable for the culttire of Kice, Cotton or
Sugar; the remainder high land, with an extern
sive anowl fine elevation on which the settle
ment is made.
The land is well timbered, and from its conti
guity to a market, will, in its clearing, instead of
incurring expense, produce profit by the pale of
Shingles and other lumber, the proceeds of which
must far exceed the expences of the labor. This
tract is one of the oldest surveys and consequent
ly best selection of ltiver Swamp land, with an
excellent pitch of tide, suitable to any species of
culture-having a beautiful scite for a residence
and located at an agreeable distance from the
town of Darien, for purposes of business or plea
