THE WITCHCRAFT CASE,
On Wednesday came on at the Superior
court o; Law, hutden for the county of
Norfolk, the trial of Joseph Lewis, charged
with the murder of a free-man of colour,
called Hass, it seems that Lewis, bcliev
mghm.self and wife bewitched, called on
a Mrs. Evans, of Portsmouth, who, to the
serious annoyance of the weaker part of so
ciety, has pretended to the gift of second
s>ght, and was a great teller of fortunes.—
She gave him to undeistand that Bass was
the one who had tricked them, and under
that impression he went deliberately home,
from thence to Bass's house, and there sons
ceremonie shot him down like a bullock:

was done so far from repenting of it, he
Upon all occasions, publicly acknowledged,

was out of the power of his able counsel to

finement in the penitentiary and we think

happy that the humanity of the jury saved
him from the gibbet.
We are gratified to learn that his honor
Judge Parker, issued a bench-warrant a

upon her apprehension, and not being ab'e

she was committed to jail, where, we pre

as to foretei her own destiny. We learn
that tiie grand juty also have presented
her as a common nuisance.—JYbr. Beacon.

change of alf-irs in the Brazils, and the
a sailin'ion of the government by the
Prince Royal, under the title of Prince
Regenj and Constitutional Protector of
Brazil reached London an the 26th of July.
The London Courier, after admitting tha’
the Brazils are lost to the Mother Coun
try seems <o think that the events that have
taken place under the government of the
Ptince, have in some measure been the ef
fects of a concerted policy between the
King and his sou. On returning to Por
tugal, the King must have foreseen that
tiie colonies would ere long become inde
pendent. Anticipating a speedy disu.em
berment from Portugal, he has wisely re
tained the sovereignty, in the person of his
[ion; and thus, should his safety be threa
tened at home, lie will still have an asylum
and a kingdom, too, rivalling the empire*
of antiquity ir. extent, arid capable of beco
ming great and powerful under the protec
tion of a resident Monarch. Upon such
terms, Spain, bad her councils riot been so
infatuated as to believe in an ultimate sub
jection of the refractory colonists, might
have preserved Mexico. The throne ol
Mexico was offered to a Bourbon before
Yturbide assumed the purple ; and had it
been accepted, Chili and Peru might, per
haps. have followed the example, and now
been under the dominion of branches ol
the Spanish Royal Family.

To the Public.
A sense of duty to my friends and a regard for
mv own feelings constrain me to appear before
(tie public m the columns of h newspaper. It is
painful for me to call the public attention to any
subject through this medium, but when an erron
eous impression exists, calculated to throw upon
me ‘he odium of moral and political duplicitv,
and to lesson my claims to the public confidence,
it is but clue to truth and justice that such im
pressmns should be removed by fa rand honora
ble means. I trust then that I mav be indulged
with the public attention, while I c'udeavorto re
move ‘lie foundation of any suspicions which cir
cumstances niight hare unjustly erected towards
my political conduct on the approaching election.
At tne time 1 became a candidate for a seat in
the legislature, my sentiments with regard to the
Judge’s election as well as the proprietvof chang
ing the time and mode of electing aldermen for
the city, were well understood; since which they
have undergone no change.
. B seems that from an occurrence which took
place at the shop of Mr. Papote, suspicions have
been excited, that I was anxious to promote the
election of Mordecai Slieftall Esq. with whose
name mine was posted up at a shop and whose
sentiments are opposed to my own and those of
my immediate friends upon the measures above
alluded to.
-1 do hereby solemnly declare and assure my
friends, that the proceedings said to have taken
place at Mr. I’apote’s were entirely without my
knowledge and certain! at variance with my
i wishes.
If ever I had formed the idea of supporting the
gentleman alluded to I could not have calculated
on the support of those opposed to him. lam
weil aware that our opinions relative to men and
measures differ, and as we were ooposed upon
these points, and all o hers for the last twelve
years, I calculated on his warm opposition, and 1
intended to put in (bred the ‘.ex I'ationti. The
assurances, which 1 gave to my friends were at
once sufficient to place that gentleman and mvself
directly opposite and I pledge myself to them that
those assurances will be rigidly adhered to. If 1
were to act otherwise, I should justly incur their
indignation*® politicians, and the oss of their
respect as men. I feel too much gratitude to
wards those whose support I expect, to oppose
their wishes on this occasion, and I trust my dis
interested conduct on the occasion will convince
my friends that 1 have used no mean e'lbvts to
promote my own election, much less that of one
whom l have alway s'believ.ed rr. ’ opponent. It can
not have escaped the observation of my friends
that the gentleman alluded to and myself have
not been on friendly terms for the last twelve
years, and that >vc arc now at variance on moral
and political sub jects,, which must at once nega
tive the idea of any support from me.
1 wish it then to be understood that if that gen
tleman is elected, that I shall have no agenev
whatever in promoting it. Our interests and
views are distinct, and there exists no political
connection between us If any of my friends
shall give him their support, it is not with my re
quest or influence, and I invite contradiction if it
can truly he made
Mr P. pote lias furnished a certificate which
.completely contradicts the charge of any agenci
on the part of ruy brother in posting the names
of Mr. Slieftall ami myself at his shop.
Whatever may be the motives of mv brother
in taking a part in the election in favour of the
gentleman alluded to, I assure my friends they
liave not their orign in my solicitations or know
ledge. He acts for himself and lam not accoun
table for what he dues, but I declare if the part lie
shall take he calculated in the smallest degree to
oppose the wishes of my friends, or my views
with regard to certain measures in the Legisla
ture, that he will act contrary to my best and
most sincere wishes
It is not a matter of importance that I should
be e voted, for there are other gentlemen among
tiie candidates better qua ified to represent the
County, but it is a.’ i important to my feelings to
convince my friends that the occurrence at Mr
Papote’s was unknown to me, and entirely at va
rience with my wishes. Whatever have been my
professions and assurances, to my friends, I pray
them to be ieve that they tliafi be strictly adher
ed to, and that my determination to co-operate
with them has not been changed.
This statement is respectfu'v submitted as
containing the true and sincere feelings which
haveand sha!'influence meon the approaching
election, and with the hope that if the circum
stance* which gave rise to these suspicions, are
to deprive irifeiiom being a Representative, they
wi not at-east prevent me from still retaining
your good opinion as a private citizen.

The very great reputation these Pills have
gained all over the U. States West-lndics and
elsewhere, has induced certain persons to make
and vend other Pills, which they call Lee’s Pills,
and they arc often pass* and off as the genuine
Lee's Windham Pills. The proprietors have
lately taken, they hope, an effectual step to
guard the public against being imposed oil by
the spurious Pills. The direction paper which
goes with each box of the genuine Pills, is al

the outside of the envelope is Perkins’ stereo

I do hereby warn the Public against certain per

I have long known their characters too well.—
They are not, nor ever have been agents of

with any of said Pills.
Every person on inspection will notice that
the Pills they offer, have not on the outside of
the wrapper the ‘‘Tests’’ printed in Red Ink and

are.
The printers in the western and southern

are much imposed on with spurious Lee’s Pills
