Hear !li«- Voir*- of Madison
u Ab this advice.
from the Tomb.
Raid Mr. Madison in a
paper written a short time previous to hie |
death, “if it ever see the light, will not
so until I am no more, it may be consid
cd ns issuing from the tomb, where truth _
alone can be respected,.and the happiness
of men alone consulted. It will be entitled,
therefore, to whatever weight can be de
rived from good intentions, and from the
experience of one who has served his coun
try in various stations through a period of
forty years; who espoused in his yonth,
and nahered through his life, to the cause
of liberty: and who has borne apart in I
most of the great transactions which will
constitute epochs of its destiny.
“ The advice nearest my heart and deep
est »n my conviction is that the Union of
the States be cherished and perpetuated.
Let the open enemy to it be regarded as a
Pandora with her box opened, and the
disguised one as the serpent creeping with
his deadly wiles into paradise.”
near Howell Cobb.
In the same year (1851,)'Hon. Howell
Cobb, of Georgia, wrotoan elaborate letter
to a Committee of citizens of Macon, in
which he ably discussed and disposed of
the subject as follows
“When asked to concede the right of a
State to secede at pleasure from the Union,
with or without just cause, we are called
upon to admit that the framers of the Con
stitution did that which was never done
by any other people possessed of their good
sense and intelligence—that is, to provido,
in the very organisation of the Govern
ment, for its own dissolution. It seems to
me that such a course would not only have
been an anomalous proceeding, bnt wholly
inconsistent with the wisdom and sound
judgment which marked the deliberations
of those wise and good men who framed
our Federal Government. Whilst I freely
admit that such an opinion is entertained
by many for whose judgment I entertain
the highest respect, I have no hesitation
in declaring that the convictions of my owu
judgment are well settled, that no such
principle wm contemplated in the adoption of
our Conititation. n
Let us then not be rash or inconsiderate;
but calm, cool and deliberate, and in a free
and fridndly manner counsel with one an
other in regard to these momentous ques
tions before us. The recommendation that
has been made, that a State Convention
should bo called immediately, we most ful-
)y approve and hope the Legislature will
at once issue a call for delegates from every

T HE very great success of the Grover * Baker Sew

been peculiarly gratifying to .the manufacturers, who
are led to believe that their endeavors to make s MM-

the Company will be unchanged, and, as heretofore,

machine best adapted to all the wants of Hie people of
the South, can be attested by thousands of Families rad

importance of meeting every want of the southern peo--

being constructed with especial care as to durability.—
We feel every cqpfidence of its giving the most com-

The IRON being absorbed by the blood, and

The experience of thousands daily proves that
no preparation of Iron can for a moment he
compared with it. Impurities of the hlood, de
pression of vital energy, pale and otherwise
sickly complexions indicate its necessity in al
most every conceivable case. In all cases of
female debility (flnor albas, chlorosis, etc.), its
effects are delightfully renovating. No remody
has ever been discovered, in the whole history

with an unusual disposition for active and
