A Bank Note.
The following amusing scone, which occur
red recently in an American family, will be
found not uninteresting to our readers. Tbe
chief role is played by money, tbe prime mov
er iu such affairs. An eye wituess recited to
us tbe occurrence in tbe following words :
One evening that I took tea with an inti
mate friend of mine, while wo wore seated at
tbe table, Mr. Baker, my friend's husband,
while absently feeling in bis vest pocket, found
a five dollar note which be bad no recollec
tion of putting there.
Halloa !' be exclaimed, * that is no place
for you. 1 should have put you in my pocket
book. Here, wife, don't you want some ready
monoy V and be threw tbe note across tbe
table to her.
•Many tbanss,’ she replied, ’money is al
ways acceptable, although 1 bavo no present
use lor it.' Sbo folded the note and put it
under tbe edge of tbe tea tray, and they pro
ceeded to pour out tbe tea aud attend to tbe
wauts of her guests.
At her right sat Mrs. Easton or Aunt Su
san. whom we all knew as an acquaiutauce
who from time to time spent a week with Mrs.
Baker. Her visit was just at an end and sbo
was about to return borne that evening. As
Mrs. Baker was pouring out her tea, it occur
red to her that she was iu her aunt's debt for
certain small matters, and w hen she bad tbe
opportunity sbo pushed tbe note under ber
plate, saying:
* Here, aunty, take this five dollars in part
payment of my debt.'
* Very well,’ 6be replied, ‘ but tbe money-
does not belong to me. I owe you fifteen dol
lars, my dear Grace, w hich you lent me last
Saturday. 1 bad to pay tbe taxes on my little
bonse and bad not tbe ready money and Grace
lent it to me,’ exclaimed Aunt Susan.
Grace, an orpbau, was a cousin to Mrs. Ba
ker. She and her brother Frank boarded
with ber, and made a very pleasant addition
to tbe family circle. Sbo was studying music
and ber brother was a clerk in a mercantile
establishment.
As soon as Aunt Susan received tbe noto,
sbo banded it to Grace, saying :
' I will give you this now on account, and
tbe rest as soon as I get it-'
* All right,' answered Grace, laughing, * and
since we all seem in tbe humor to pay our
debts, I will follow suit. Frauk, I owe you
something for music you bought me ; here is
part of it;’ and sbo threw tbe bank noto across
tbe table to ber brother, who sat opposite.
We were all highly amused to see how the
bank note wandered around tbe table.
* This is a wonderful note,’ said Mr. Baker,
I only w ish somebody owed me something
and I owed somebody something, so that I
could come into tho ring.’
You can,’ said Frank. ‘ I owe Airs. Ba
ker, or you, it’s all tbe sarao, for my board ; I
herewith pay you for it.’
Amid general laughter, Mr. Baker took tbe
note and playfully threw it again to bis wife,
saying, * It’s yours again, Lucy, because wbat
belongs to me belongs to you. It has com
pleted tbe round, and wo have all bad the
benefit ef it.’
* And now it must go around again,’ re
plied she gaily. * I like to see money circm
late; it sbonld never lie idle. Aunt Susan
yon take it; now I have paid you ton dollars.
Dear Grace, boro is another five dollars on
my account,’ said Annt Susan, banding it to
Grace.
‘ And yon, Frank, have received ten dollars
for tbe music yon brought me,’ said Grace,
handing it to ber brother.
And I pay you ten dollars for my board
continued be, and tbe note once more rested
in Mr. Baker's bands. Tbe exchanges were
as quick as thought, and we were convulsed
with laughter.
Was there ever so wonderful an exchange t
exclaimed Grace.
It's all nonsense,’ cried Mr. Baker.
Not in tbe least,’ answered bis wife, * It'
all quite right.’
* Certainly,' said Frank, • when the money
belong* to you, you conld dispose of it os you
would ; I have tbe same right. It is a fair
kind of exchange, altbongb very uncommon.'
* It shows tbe use of money,' said Aunt Su
san ; * it makes tbe circuit of tbe world, and
brings its value to every one who touches it.
' And this note bas not finished its work
yet. as I will show yon, my dear hnsbaod,
you will give it to me again, said Mrs. Baker
* I present you with this five dollar note,
said Mr. Baker.
* Aod 1 give it to yon, Aunt Susan—I owed
yon fifteen dollars, and I have paid my debt
* Yon have, my dear friend, without doubt
and now, my dear Grace, I pay you my in
debtedness, with many thanks for yonr assist
ance.’
I take it with thanks, Annt Snsan,’ re
plied Grace; and now the time has come
when this wonder working, this inexhaustibly
rich bank note must be divided, because I
don't owe Frank five/dollars more. How
much have I to pay yet t'
* Two dollars and sixty-two cents,' replied
Frank.
* Can you change it t’
* Let me see .* two thirty-eight; yes, there

A YEAR HENCE.
We blindly grope along tbe wall,
With feeble, fluttering fingers,
We list to bear a footstep fall,
Where silence only lingers;
We fain would tread the path that lies
Tbe most remote from shadows.
And underneath tbe voicelees skies
We seek for pleasant meadows.
We wonder if the light to-day
That seems onr faith replying,
On silvery sail will drift away
Wben tbis year shall be dying.
We pause beneath tbe starry track
Of smiling worlds above us,
And dream they're softly answering back
Immortal loves—who love us.
We clasp tbe band of lover, friend,
And bear bis pledges over;
Yet swiftly to tbe twelvemonth's end

The planets change, and Heaven's own blue

A steady band with goodness fraught
Will build us restful arbor;

In joy or tribulation,
Stand brave and patient, everyone,
