Ftmlai,
Under ibis bond the Columbus Timet-
makes the following euggestion :
The newspapers of the Slate are again
advising (the planters bow to pilch and
plant tbeir crops. We respectfully sug
gest to our cotemporaries that the fall sea
son is the proper time to tender ibis ad
vice. We believe that the average plan
ter knows his bu-ineas better than an edr
itor can; yet wo venture to offer a sug
gestion to ’tho planters. Sturt a hand
early in September to sowing oats in the
cotton field, just after it'is picked over the
first time. The ploughing, if judiciously
done, will not materially injure the crop
A few young bolls will be knocked oft
and will fertilise the land. By this pro
cess you will got the advantage which the
wheat crop receives in England by a clean
fallow, and ono band will by January sow
down perhaps eighty acres. From Janu
ary until cotton planting timo ho can pro
paro twenty acres for corn and cotton.
Thus a hand will cultivate one hundren
acres, and labor will prove plentiful or.
profitable. Try the plan. It has bei>
found profitablo in North Georgia. We
am aw. e that roost men plant large C"i
ton crops in order to meet ma'tirii .
no’es Bui alter the eighty icres. if'oat-
followed 0) eight) ucres of huy, all fro,
ono ploughing of eighty acres, are galhe-
ed and the proceeds s -!d, wo think inn'll

Too Many Dogs.
In twenty-one couiiiios in Georgia very
careful agricultural statistics were collect
ed last year, in compliance with a Stale
law. In these counties the whiles hud
35,697 sheep; the negroes barely 265
They owned 4,211 dogs, or about twenty
times as many dogs as sheep to supply
them with wool for clothing and mutton.
It is difficult to discover any way in
which Southern agriculture may proupcr
while a savage taste for dogs aud guns
aro so powerful, not only with persons ol
color, but with same millions ofthe-white
race. In tho twcnty<-one, the counties
referred to, the whites keep seventeen
thousand six hundred and ninety .seven
dogs.'

What has the Grange Done.
What haa tbo Grange done for oar ooun
try, that its history should be explored,
it* philosophy illustrated, and its claims
advanced among tho influences which im
pel civilization ?
It has enabled the farmers to elevate
their vocation, to make a division of labor
which tends to equalize society, and to
teach the benefit of kindly dependence.
It unite* our pcoplo north, south, cast and
west, cultivates kindly rolatioas between
them, encourages an interest in each other,
and promote* brotherly feeling as the
strongest guarantee of permanent friend
ship. People that differed in opinion in
thought, and in education, have been
brought in contact to find how much
there is in common to thorn all, and to im
provo tbeir condition, by supplying the
wants of tho one section from tbo abund
ance of the other.
Tho friendly intercourse created by the
Grange, is slowly but surely revolutioniz
ing the whole country It has been but
a short time since men of both sections,
met only on the field of battlo, now they
meet as brother; in tbe Grange, where in
consulting tbeir own interests, as an order,
they advance the cause of humanity an'l
peace. These aro somo of the glorious
things tbo Grange baa already dono, and
will continue to do, until we are once moro
a united and prosperous people.
Let us of tbo South, not despond. Tbe
end is not yet. Let the oppressed and
down-trodden be cheered, for eternal jus
tice watches over all, and moves onward
to ovorcoine wrong and oppression in His
own good timo.—Farmer's Vindicator.

To have good tomatoes one must secure
strong, healthy plants, and this cannot be
dono in poor land. They will “ranto
vines” at first, bnt tbo tips should bo

such fruit as oxhanstied soil never can pro-
