poor, tboro should be some manure put
under each piece of the seed potato. By
this method their cultivation is made al
most as easy as any other crop. Tho old
system of building ui^idgcfi, and then
scraping them down again with a hoe, is
not only a waste of labor, bat damaging
to the potato. If tbe soil is rich, tho nu-
lure of the vine is to throw down a batch
of rootless into tbe earth from each joint
as immediately under each leaf; these
roots greatly increase the growth of the
vine but divert the circulation of sap from
the hill, where tbe young potatoes demand
its determination ; houce tho enormous
crop of vines, and failure of potatoes we
generally see on rich land. It is the
business of the farmer to prevent- such re
suls, by tearing the vines from these fast'
enings, trimming them off, and feeding
them to his hogs, which will give them
growth and fatness, and afford bis grotv-
ing potatoes that proportion of air and
sunshine which they demand in ordor to
roako a crop in quantity proportioned to
the fertility of the soil. I greatly prefer

Clean Farming.
Wo heartily endoreo the following by a
correspondent of Coloman’a .Rural World :
Nothing should be grown or suffered to
grow on a farm that cannot be converted
into money. Weeds and briars, therefore,
should not bo permitted to grow, for there
is no money value in them, therefore thoy
are a nuisance. A crop of weeds, permit
ted to go to soed, will exhaust the soil as
much as a crop of grass or grain, whieh
have a money value. It is amusing to
hear men—farmers—say that they let
tbeir fields go to weeds in order to rest
their land, and to be ploughed under tbo
next season for manure. There can be no
objection to tbo ploughing under of green
crops as a manure, but the refuse of
defunct weeds will add but little to the
fertility of the soil. Why not grow grass
instead of weeds ? With very little trouble
land can bo seoded down to grass, and
need for pasture or hay; this can be con
verted into milk, beef, wool, mutton or
pork, out of which money can bo made.
Tho droppings of the stock and tho sod
full of roots, may bo ploughed uuder for
another crop in rotation. Any system of
farming that will admit any part [say one
Gold] of tbo farm to remain unpropduc-
live for ono year cannot bo considered
good farming. Every acre of tillabio land
on a farm, if proporiy managed, will pro
dace something that can bo converted into
money. Hero is whore the great secret
of good farming lies. Talk about giving
‘and rest ! Give it plenty of food i and
change of occupation, and it requires no
rest. With a system based on theso prin
ciples, it will grow stronger and better
every year.
Potatoes in England.
Tbo Horticulturist states that it is not
true, as popularly supposed that the pota
to was first brought into England *by Sir
Walter Raleigh. John Hawkins first in
troduced it in 1565; next Walter Raleigh,
in 1584 ; finally, Admiral Drake, m 1586,
in England, sent some to a friend toplant,
with the remark that the fruit was excel
lent and nutritious, so that it would be
very useful in Europe; his friend planted
the tubers, end they grew nicely, but
when the seed-balls were ripe, he took
theso instead of the tubers, and fried them
in butter, and, sprinkling sugar and cinna
mon over them, placed them before somo
company as a great rarity. Of course
theso balls tasted disgustingly, and the
assembly concluded that the fruit would
not ripen in Europe. f 'Tho%arden*f s %ulI-
ed up the plants and fcu&ai} them; but a
gentleman who chBnceu to be” present
stepped on ono of the baked potatoos as it
lay in the ashes, when it broke open, and
l*o noticed that it was white as snow,
and mealy, and had such an agreeable
smell that ho tasted it and found it very
palatable. The now vegetable was thus
rescued: but for a century after it was
only cnltivatcd in bis garden, and in 1600
tbe Queen of England made tbe remark
in her house-book that a pound of pota*.
toes cost two shillings.
