Coal Ashes anil Curculio.
I have for several years saved inj
plums irom the ravages of the curculio by
the use of coal ashes. They become so
completely disgusted with it that they
leave for other panss^Just so soon ft* the
blossoms fall I commence with my ashes. ■
I take a bucketful of the ashes under my
arm, and with the other hand I das!, the
ashes all over and through the trees, cov
ering the plums completely with ashes,
and go round every tew days and givt
them another dose. It the raiu washes
off, I renew the dose and keep at .it til.
my plums ate ripe, when I am welt paid
tor my trouble. I had, this year, eight
bushels on seven small trees, which I solo
lor thifty two dollars. I, .have Severn
trees di the Belne Claude variety upo.
which I did not use^the.ashes, because thv
plums were scattering. I thought i '
would not pay, but there was one limb t i
one of those trees that was close to tho»<
I put the ashes on; it got its share ot thi
ashes, and that limb ripened up all of its
plums, but not a plum was there left 01
the other part of the tree or on any ol thi
other trees of that variety. This was con
clusive evidence to.jne that it was tin
ashes that saved my plums. Vivien I firs'
commenced using the ashes, my brothei
told me that X would not succeed ; that hi
made sure of saving his plums by placing
a sheet uuder his trees and shaking th>
little Turks off ot his trees, and eatcbni;
them on the sheet and killing them. Bin
when plums were ripe I had plenty mid in
bad none.—Cor. Ohio Farmer.

Lands of moderate fertility, well, lu t

for next planting. Sweet potatoes noi ei
sell for less than fifty cents per bushel in

Cull lire of Cabbage.
A prominent tanner of New York State
writes:
Since tbe advent of the cabbage worm
almost everyone has been at a loss to know
wbat to do to raise a few cabbages. Some
have tried one thing and some tried anoth
er, aud mostly to no purpose. Last year
1 set about three hundred and thirty fine
plauts aud picked off the worms by’ band
as they came, for about two weeks, which
took about two hours each day. This seem
ing to be tou mueh work, and as 1 have
well of soft water near by, I took a five-
puil-kettle, setit near the well and put in
to it a pint of suit soap and tho same of
salt and then filled it up with water. I let this
stand till the water was warmed by the sun,
and then, alter strring it up well, I took
my water pot and applied it at the rate ol
about a gallon to tony heads, putting it
in the center. I did this every day, and
tbe result was l bad the nicest and hard
est cabbage that ever were raised. I bad
no trouble to get ten cents per bead, al
though cabbage was very cheap here.
Some make a practice of buying their plants
but I would nutgivo one cent per hundred,
unless X knew what I was getting. I use
Comstock & Co’s Premium Flat Dutch. They
are the best late eabbagos X can find.
Keep Borax ill tlic IIous t.
In the laundry it is economical, as it
saves botb labor and soap, and, is really
eheaper than the latter. For blankets
and other large articles it .is especially
valuable, and in all cases the use of a lit.-
tle borax will save half the labor when the
articles are much soiled. It is perfectly
effectual in driving away red ants, cock
roaches, etc., it sprinkled around on
shelves, or put in tbe run-ways of the. in
sects. Borax is also of great value lor
toilet uses. For removing daudruif and
cleausing the hair it is unequaled. It is
also a good remedy tor rongli face and
chapped hands.. Its application towouuds,
sores, bruises, sprains, etc., prove?.my
salutary, amfls often the 'only Teuiefiy re
quired, even in severe eases. * •
