The Journal of Commerce aaya the pile of
buildings constituting; Blenheim Palace was
erected in the reign of Queen Ante, by special
act of Parliament, to reward and commemorate
the services of tha greet Marlborough, who
previous it the time of Wellington was cou
sidsred the beet soldier that England had ever
produced. His Skillful movements on the
Continent, and especially at the battle of
Bleuhefm, on the i!4ih of August, 1704, were
with the assistance of Priuee Eugene, lie
g lined a complete viotory over Marshall Tal-
Urd and the Eleolor of Uavarin, made him
exceedingly popular in hi* own country, and
procured tor him the Manor of Woodstock
and title of Puke, which were settled upon
him and his hens forever. Although A*wO,-
000 were appropriated for the erection of the
palace, the jealousy of a lory minister wi'h-
held the funds, alter an advanee of £240.000,
and the remainder of tha ooat, £00,000, was
pa d for bis private fortune. It was not com*
pleted ontil after his death, in 1713. The
style it the Italo-Coriuf hian. the whole occu-
pying three sides of a square, with a front
measuring 348 feet fox* wing to wieg. The
architect was Sir John Van Rurgb. I’he ex
lerior is richly ornamented and set off to the
greatest advantage'by the artistic arrange
ments of a park of 2,940 acres, a model of
laudaeape gardening. The interior is furnish
ed with corresponding elegance and taste.—
Within the chapel are the remains of the first
Duke, Lis wife, and two children, and their
statues, executed by Rysback. The library is
a noble hall, containing among other treasures
the SdnderlHnd collection of more than 27,000
volumes. The astronomical observatory, near
the cast angle, is well provided with appara
tus, including a telescope ty lietschel, pre
sented by King George 111 after bis visit to
Blenheim in 1780.
Woodstock is GO miles from London, and
noted for its historical associations. It was
here that KiDg Alfred resided translating
llocthius; here too lived the Fair Rosamond,
so well kuowo, and at Woodstock llenry 11
received the Prince of Wales and Malcolm,
King of Scotland. Edward I held a parlia
ment at Woodstock in the year 1273, and both
his son Edmnnd and the reuowned Black
Priuee were born here ; it was also the birth
place of Chaucer. The oi l palace was at in
ternals occupied by Richard 11 and llenry III,
and llenry VII, narrowly escaped assassina
tion there. In the same place, Elizabeth, the
•laughter of the latter, was confined, before
•ue came to the throne, by her aieter Mary —
Sir Waller Sootl has named one of bit novels
from Woodstock. The present population is
about 9,000.

nature makes known aoy deviation, whatever,
from the natural state of the bram, and view
ed in this light, it tray be looked on as a safe
guard intended to give notice of disease which
might otherwise escape attention, till too late j
to be remedied; and its indications should
never be neglected. Headaches may be classi. {
fied under two names, vis: Symptomatic and i
idiopathic. Symptomatic Headache is exceed- I

variety of diseases, among which are Apoplexy,

Constipation or Costiveness.
No one of tbe “many ills llesh is heir to” is
so prevalent, so little understood, and so much
neglected as Costiveness. Often originating in
carelessness, or sedentary habits, it is regarded
as a slight disorder of too little consequence to
excite anxiety, while in reality it is the pre
cursor and companion of many of the must
fatal aud dangerous diseases, and. unless early
eradicated, it will bring tbe suPeror to an un
timely grave. Among tnelighlci **\> sot which
costiveness is the usual attendant, are Head
ache, Colic, Rheumatism, Foul Breath, Piles
and others of like nature, while c long train of
frightful diseases, such as Malignant Fevers
Abcesscs, Dysentary, Diarrbcea. Dyspepsia
Apoplexy, Epilepsy,* Paralysia, Hysteria, Hy
pochondriasis, Mclaueboly and Insanity, first
indicate their presence in th^ system by this
alarming symptom. Not unfrequently the dis
eases uamed originate ip Constipation, but
take on on independent existence, unless the
cause is eradicated in an early stage. From all
these considerations it follows that the disorder
should receive immediate attention wheuever
it occurs, and no person should ncgl«*rt to get
a box of Cephalic Pills on the first appearance
of the complaint, as their timely use will expel
the insiduout approaches of diaeasoaad destroy
this dangerous foe to human life.
Gruat Discovert.—Among the most impor
tant of all the great medical discoveries of this
ago may be considered the system of vaccina
tion for protection from Small Pox, the Cepha
lic Pill for relief of Headache, and the use of
QuiDiue for the prevention of Fevers, either
of which is a sure specific, whose benefits will
be axperienced by sufloriog humanity long af
ter theft discoverers are forgotten.
