The Chemical uses ol* Cotton.
One of our correspoudeiit* has draon our
attention to a dneuahiou which has been going
on *0 the New York Polytechnic Institute,
touching the uses of Colton, not merely iu a
mechanical and manufacturing, but in acheoi-
ieal poiut of view. It wax there said that, up
to the present lime, little has been done with
the raw material in correspondence with its
chemical susceptibilities. One speaker, who
6eerus to have been ttiognUt ly unconscious ol
what the world ha* been doing, uod of the dis
covers e made in the Inst twenty jeur-, grave
ly informs us 1 lint, “with further experiments,
it (Cotton) could be made a substitute for gun
powder. and be particularly useful in charg
ing shells, for it can be applied ezioinporane*
ous-ly.” The fact has been long since known ;
not only lo chemist*, but. to military meu, and
wc doubt not that wc ahull hare some of these
shells which ».re to be us-cd (if necessary)
ngaiost Fort Sumter, d.argtd with tbit 1 ative
substitute fer gut powder. The same speaker
ad is; “There should be n Solvent for it,
for, if it could he di-solved, wnodco images
even might be clothed (with it.) although the
solvcui will evaporate aud leave the Cotton
triinip irert ; it has no strength." (Qu T)
Now, we believe that this solvent bah been
found, and the chemical uhhoI Colton largely
developed, by (lie experiments hi.J discoveries
made by the lute James M Ltgnrc, one of the
young pects cf South Carolina, whoe invent
ive gvuius carried him as successfully itnotLe
fields of the mechanical as of :ne fine art* and
fiction ; a poet of singular sweetness and deli,
ciicy, of fine fancy and generous culture, he
hab left us some volumes of wry exqnmiie
wise. But the latter portions cf I 9 life—and
he died prematurely, n ; n.uM m the vetv be
ginning ol 11 career which prcu.iMd n future of
«quiil eminence and usei'ulmes— were deveed
to experiment' iu thi- tc»y pi evince M mixed
an and chemistry. lie discovered, ns we be-
licvc. a solvent for Coil* n and applied it. with
exquisite tus-ic and sinpuhir fthcitj, to n nni
c y of purposes, orti»uieiiial mid useful llo
made it u suhbtiiute n r poptermaehc, aud cons
verted ii into a vaiiety ol fine fabrics of orna
ment, such ns we owe lo the Ficnch. His
picture irntms, for example, of this material
wort' very much ndmirtd, and cculd le node
with facility, and were einiMilarly cheap. But
one of the more impettant lives to which he
applied Codt n, was m the rjtfing of houfes,
which he claimed to he indestructible by fire
and water, and almost by time These dis
coveries and inventions, lor wlrch lie took out
iiiUrits, or hi least entered cuvents. were well
known to the public ol South Carol! n; w©
believe that their metiis were at least partial*
ly acknowledged; but discoveries circulate but
slowly in all purely syricubuiai countries,
amt bad health and narrow nsources dtnied
to the young invent* r the advantages which
will lo doubt fijw, hcreaf'er, from his labors,
to 0:hers, who, with larger capital, shall be
able 10 pursue them to definite mill's, a ml
bring them into gnicral notice. We beg to
suggest to his relatives that some efforts should
be made >o bring to public consideration the
discoveries and inventions of ibis highly gift
ed young man. For roofing, we have heard it
stated that hie invention tvu3 singularly sue*
cesrful. At the North, a recent toe of India-
rubber, for roofing, is raid to be successful—
to he impervious 10 water and fire. The ma*
IcrUI is node el' pa/cr and saturated in tho
caoutchuc. Nj doubt the paper is utado of
Cotton. Now, if the Cotton itself cun Le so
prepared uh to be equally secure for roofing,
we may well spare the auxiliary agency of the
ludiarubber. If the inventions of joong Le-
g iro poxt>(S9 the advantages which ate claimed
tor them, it is difficult lo limit tlio number of
uses to which his preparation might be appli
ed. The South can only see in these Fugges-
lions of the chemists added proofs of its pecu
liar mourccs, ax the greuie.-t of modern pow
ers, from th© almost exclusive possession of
this greatest of all materials for niuiovt univer
sal manufactures.
