selected by tha majority of persona as tba prop

The Convention at this session, will have to

Washington, March 15 —In the Senate to
day Mr. Douglas made a very forcible and el
oquent speech, in the course of which he de
monstrated ilie impossibility of collecting the
revenue in tbo ports of the seceded Stales.—
He was frequently interrupted by questions
from the Republican Senators, to whom his
positions nnd arguments were very unpalata
ble.
j Mr. Douglas, in this great speech, shewed
i that the Government had no law or power to
' collect the revenue in tha South, except by
capturing all the forts in the seceded States,
■ which would require 280,000 men, and an an-
j nual expenditure of $810,000,000. beeides

There is one fact to which we would particularly cai®
the attention of our Merchants: that Is the practice
universally adopted by non-residents of running a stock
of goods in our maiket, and going around to small
traders, planters, Ac., and without moving goods from
! the Depot, dispote of them. Tie true, there Is a small
, tax of 65cts upon the $100 worth Imposed by Council,
i but It is not enough. They should be compelled to place
j their goods under some resident Merchant's control,
j and pay for the privilege.
This practice, we know, meets gensral disapproval by
all our Merchants, as also dues the one adopted by sev
eral Western houses, of sen-ling drummers out through

We desire to call the attention of the South
ern people lo this extensive Publishing House
and Hook-Bindery.
The large assortment of Priming Materiel
of Messrs. J. M. Wood & 0?., and C. R Han
loiter, Esq. having been combined, and about
•even ihousaud dollars' worth of new material
added thereto, this is now probably the most
complete Establishment in the South. They
have six presses in operation, throe of them
run by sttam, and an amplj supply of every
thing, for doing all kinds of work.
Their workmen, in every department, are
experienced and skillful, and their ttook of
ike best quail y—itierefere, their patroos may
rely upon having their work executed in the
most tasteful manner, on good material, aud
with dispatch.
One of the chief objects of the Proprietors
in enuaging in this enterprise was, to render
: the .South, so far as their facilities would per
: mil, independent of nlll other sections ; const-
! quently those having books which they wish
j printed and bound, should give them a trial,
j before tending North.
There is connected with this well furuiehed
i Priming Establishment, one of the best aud
| most complete Rook Binderies in the South,
j where all kinds of books, newspapers and
j magazines are bound, old books re bound, and
I blank books of every description made aud
ruled to any pattern desired ; in short, in this
branch of their business they are prepared to
do any kind of work, in eoy style, and at short
notice.
The Proprietors are now receiving a “heavy
run" if work. The decisions of the Supreme
Court of Georgia—which will make a volume
of several hundred pages ; two religious books
of several hundred pages each ; a novel, a work
of several hundred pages; a new hook ou
Slavery, (written by a Georgia slave); and
several other b(.oks. that we do not now reool
leot the names of, are now passing through the
press al this Establishment.
There are also two newspapers published at
this Establishment—the “Landmark Banner
| & Chemkee Baptist," a largo, handsome and
; popular paper, edited by Revs. Jesse M. Wood
and II. (’ llornady—and the * .Southern Con
federacy,” a spirited and well conducted pa
per, published l»y C. U. llanleiter and George
\V. Adair, Esqrs., editors and Proprietors.
Having been connected with this Es ablish-
merit for several months, past, we (junior ed«
itor) are prepared to speak knomnyly of its
facilities for doing any kind of printing or
book-binding, in any style drsired, and at
prices that cannot fail to give latiafaction.
The Proprieio’9 are ell Southern men. born
and educated in i he Soul h, and are “all right"
on the question of Southern Independence.—
Our oU friend and former fellow-townsman,
Uen’l Rice, is one of the Proprietors.
All ordsrs adiressedto Messrs. Wood, Hao-
