CLAKKE, SiuvcHHoi' to Clarke Ac Lewis, IMPORTER A DEALER IN EXfiLISU & AUElilGAX HARDWARE, T-i'NKrv Southern ®oafc dewrg From the N*w York Day Book. A Lyric for tbs Times. A correspondent, who occasionally indulges in rhymes, sends us the following upon tbe re cent escapade of our to-be President after 4th Match. It would fairly be considered too te- vere, we think, upon any President who bad not already degraded tbe high office to which be bad been elected. A President deserves re spect so long as he respects himself, but when he mortifies even his own party as well es his opponents, and commits, in the face of thirty millions of American people and tbe entire world, an act of gross timidity, be must expect that tbe shafts ol ridicule will be aimed at him. Mr. Lincoln’s speeches, his want of dignity, Ac., were, to a certain extent, harmless, and if his Irieuds sre satisfied with them, we are; but Northern Democrats, we beg to suggest don’t «aulto tee the North brought into contempt. They have some pride for it, notwithstanding il is well ni|;h given over to fanaticism. That they hope in due time to exterminate, or at least, render comparatively powerless, but a stigma once fixed is seldom rubbed out: YE FLYGHT OF YE RAIL-8PLITTER. Of all ye flights that ever was fluwn, By several persons, or one alone— Of Science, or Dr. Franklin’s kite; Of “ Mincio” Raymond, away from the fight; Or the flight of Professor Lowe’s balloon, From here to England, one day at toon ; The funniest flight—of the dreariest bore— Was Abraham's flight through Baltimore! Weary and worn like a hunted moose, Limbs like the windmill, banging loose ; Qoaking at the heart ana fl ghty at bead, The old Rail-Splitter—he went to bed. But scarce in his b'ankets enveloped was he, When he cried, “I am struck with a bright idee, Procure ma hither—aud don’t be long— A hot rum-teddy, and make it strong !” • in. Now various dreams aro like to come From a brimming beaker of good old rum; Aud tome of them, too, are just as bad As any that Tom O'Shanter had. Aud so, when Abraham laid him down, To dream of doing the Southerners “brown,” It ebanetd that a phantasy, bloody and grim, Came sailing over and lit on him ! IV. Dead men tossed about like stones; Broken bridges; blood aud bonea; Grinning death’s heads, such as grace Every antique burial place; Daggers, pistols, bludgeons, guns, Thunder showers of red hot buns;— These he saw. or seemed to see, All because of tbe “ bright idee !’’ v. Then suddenly, in from the murky night There came a messenger wild with fright, And he cried to Abraham, where he lay, Got up, old fellow, and scurry away !” So the dismal phantoms of sleep gave place To a very practical view of tbe case; And the Rail-Splitter said, as be looked at him —“John, Just wait till I get my trowsers on!” vt. So he swore au oath, by Kingdom Come, That Satan was in that glass of rum 1 Aud he said, “ may I never split rails again, If I don’t run off by a special train !*’ Then, shrouded closely, up to the eyes, With a cloak, and a Scottish cap likewise, He left his people dissolved in brine, And ran away as tbe clock struck nine. VII. ftly along the Central Road Went the fiery hurt* with bis precious load; And at every snort he seemed to say, ••’Tis a Western gentleman running away! The greatest beg>ra under tbe run! Bee if it isn't a glorious unn !” Thus Honest Abram, safe and sound, Stood at last on the Capitol ground. Ah, very noble it teems to be— This modern standard of chivalry ! And very noble and very grand Is the chiefest magnate in the land, Abraham Lincolu, stalwart and tall, Who run away quaking from nothing at all! • Honest Uncle ” ot *6], Who skulked in the night to Washington !
