together cease to bo marvelous, tad of oil plo-
cos in lilt world, a muttum io thl Btott lire-
tomt. So. amid the whirl and roar of winter
lift iu Walking*on, when onehtoiicnt to road,
writ! or think, and aoaraely no tin# to cat,
drink and ilttp, whin tht day* fly likt hours,
and iht brain retlt under the excitement of
Iht protracted debauch, lift becomes an intol
erable bore. Vet the plaoe hat an innate fti-
cioitian for thoit who luffer moot acutely
from tht Irdium vital, to which leery one it
more or lett a prey ; and med and woman,
who bare lived in Washington are seldom
contented elsewhere. The motbe return to
the llaming candle unlil^they art consumed.
*• In conclusion, it mutt be admitted that
Washington ia the elysimn of oddities, Iht
limbo of absurdities, and etnbroglio of ludic
rous anomalies, ldanned on a teals of sur
passing grandeur, its architectural execution
is almost contemptible. Blessed with the
name of the purest of men, it has the reputa
tion of Sodom. The teat of Iht law-making
power, it is the center of riolenee and disor
der which disturb the peace and harmony of
the whole republic—the chosen resort for
dualling, clandestine marriages, and the most
stupendous thefts.
■ • Jl i, a city without commerce, and with
out manufactures; or rather, its commerce is
illicit, and its manufacturers are newspaper
correspondents, who weava tissues of fiction
out of the warp of rumor and the web of pre
sentation. The site of the United States
Treasury, it it the home of eserything butaf-
11 urine. Its publio buildings are splendid,
its prieelo dwellings gensrally squslid. The
houses are low, the renta high ; the streets
aro broad, the croetiogs narrow; the hocks
ore black, the horses while ; the squares are
triangles, except that cf the eepitol, which ie
cral; end the wster is so soft that it is hard
I o drink it, eren tht admixture of alcohol.
“• It itas a monument thftt nerer will be fin
ished, ft capitol that islohatt adomc, ascieo-
tilio institute which does nothing but report
tne rise and fail of the themome'.er, and two
pieces of equestrian statuary which it would
bo ft waste of limo to criticise. It boasts a
steamlct dignified with the name of the riser
Tiber, nnd this stesmlet is cf the size and
much the appearance of a vein iu ft dirty
man’s arm. It hrs a canal, but is a mud pud
dle during one half of the day, tod an empty
ditch during the other.
** Ia spite of the labors or the Smithsonian
Institute*, It las no particular weather. It
has the climate of all ports of the habitable
globe. It rains, hails, freezes and blows, all
in llio space of Iweniy-four hours. After a
fortnight of steady ruin, the sun shines out,
and in half nu hour the s'reels are filled with
clouds of dust.
‘•Property in Washington is exceedingly
sensitive, the people alarmingly callous. The
men aro fine looking, the women homely.—
The Utter have plain faces, but magnificent
busts nnd gracoful figures.
“The former have an impoaiug presence and
an empty pocket, a great name and a smalt
conscience. Notwithstanding all these impedi
ments end disadrantagee, Washington is pro
gressing rapidly. It ia fast becoming a large
city, but must always remain a deserted Tillage
iu the Summer. Its destmy is that of the
Union. It will be the greatest capitol the
world errr saw, or it will bo a parched place
iu the wilderness, a ‘salt land not inhaliled,'
and ‘ercry one that passeth thereby shall be
abtoniehed and wag hia head.”

Dollar Jewelry.
Speaking of the stores established in many
cities of the United States where purchasers
of jewelry can have their, “choice for one dol
lar,” the Chicago “Journal” Bays:
The principal composition used in the man
ufacture of the jewelry is termed Oreide, and
is simply an excellent quality of brass. It is
ibe most positive imitation of gold that has
ever been discovered; it wears like it—not
discoloring Any thing it touchee, as common
brass or cupper will; it may be engraved or
chased—being the same all the way through ;
it ie much softer and more readily fused than
gold, however, and ita value may be imagined
when we say that adoxen finely chased spoons
of this metal can de bought for $4 60, with a
profit to the retailer, even si that price, of
over thirty-lhret per cent.
Of this metal, the New York “Scientific
American,” most excellent authority, say*:
Oreide of gold, of which so many cheap ar
ticles of jewelry are cow made, is simply a
very beautiful brass, without a single grain of
gold in its composition.
The costlieet part of the “Oreido” operation
is the molds and forms in which the jewelry
ia shaped and cu». Where they obliged to
have these moulds made expressly at each
change of fashion, it would materially reduce
the profits; but they avoid this difficulty by
purchasing the molds iu which jewelers have
made the real gold jewelry, and tbui also ob
tain the latest patterns. Probably the most
expensive looking piece of this jewelry does
not cost for the meial-aiolding, putting togeth
er and making up, forty cents.
