Cortinas, it Is understood, was awaiting the departure of the Federal troops to recommence operations on a larger scale than heretofore. Connecticut Election. WASBIS0TO*, April l.—The few returns re ceived from Conaectieut show Republican gains. Latest from Europe. The steamship Africa, with Livarpool advi ces to the ldth March, arrived at New York the 31 at. The sales of Cotton for the previous week, at Liverpool, reached 58,200 bales, of which spec ulators took 9,000 bales, and exporters 11,000 baits. The market opened declining, but sub sequently recovered under the steamship Kan garoo's advices and doted firm, at last week’s quotations. Sales on Friday 15,000 bales, of which speculators and exporters took 7,000 bales. Sales of Saturday 25,000 bales, of which speculators and exporters took 8,000 bales.' Hewitt reports the market buoyant and an ad vance of fully 7td. The stock of Cotton at Liverpool was 907,000 bales, of which 750,000 bales were American. Breadstuff* firm. Provisions quiet. Flour quiet but steady. Wheat firm and partially a •hade dearer. Lard haavy. Nails declining. Rice firm ; Carolina at 20t. 9d.@14t. 3d. Manchester advices were favorable, and thera was an unimproved lone. The African brought £38,800 in specie. The bullion in the Bsnk of England bad in creased £280,000. Yesterday being one of military parade, and the excitement attending the departure of our “ Guards.’’ not much was done in the way of trade. Large numbers of visitors were in atten dance, and we may look for n brisk and heavy business to-day. We have no material change to report, except a alight decline in Coro of i(<$l cent on inferior grade*. Prices rule the same on all goods. Or ders are being received in some number, and the demand for Produce is still lively, notwith standing the immense shipments. The Western ic Atlantic Railroad daily brings her quota of NO cars, and nodecrea*eof freights above is perceptible, and as far West as we can perceive, freight is rapidly coming. The business of Atlanta has rapidly increased in the last few months. It is the great distribu ting point for everywhere, and to show briefly the increase, we give the following fact: The amount of freight chargeable to Atlanta Agency. Western A Atlantic Railroad, range from $S,000 to $12,000 per month. Last August it ran as high as $.'£>.000, and was acknowledged to be the greatest amount ever liooked against Atlan ta in one month. We need only state the charges for the month of March have already reached $85,000, and will probably go to $90,000 or $92.- 000.
