SAMUEL SMITH, march 30. General Insurance Agency. Mthf xn How Daniel O’Connell Ones “leMw Mr* Russell. Mr. Russell, the celebrated Cristean cor respondent ef ths London “Times,” who at a rived in this ooantry a few days ago, is ths same gentleman who was sent by that journal to Irsland Ip report O'Connell’s speeches, dur ing the repeal agitation. One of the first meetings the newspaper man attended was In Kerry. Having heard of O'Oonnoll’s polite qualities, be thought bs would ask that geo- tic men's permission to take a terbalim acoounl of tho oration. The “Liberator” not only consented, but in his oilitat manner, informed the assembled audience that “until that gin- tlemao was provided with ell writiu’ convan* lences he wouldn’t spake a word,” aseumiog an extra brogue, which was altogether un necessary. Russell waa delighted. Tho pre parations began, and were completed; Rue* sell wae ready. 1 “ Are you quite ready !” asked Dsn. 44 Quite ready.” 44 Now, are you sure you're entirely ready ?” “ I’m certain, Sir. Yes.” The erowd becoming excited and impatient, Dap said: “Now, ’pon my conscience 1 won’t begin the speech till the Londou gintleman ie imirely ready.” After waiting another moment or so, O'Con nell advanoed ; eyes glistened ; ears were all at tent ion ; end the reportorial penoil arose.— Dab gave one benignant smile on the corres pondent, winked at the auditors, and commen ced hie speech in the Irish language, lo the irre pressible horror of Mr. Russell, and lo the delight of all Kerry. A “Refreshing Season” at a California Prayer-Meeting. The Mariposa (Cal.) “Gazelle” tells the fol lowing laughable anecdote: A Democrat of tbo Grand River Valley, not often seen in church, recently attended a Methodist prayer meeting. We shall call him Squiggle by way of concealment. In a short lime bis countenance soon lost its usual jolly look, and be became oblivious of tbe solemn ities going on around him, and was plunged into a profound reverie over the recent defeat of his party in Maine, which bo had been discussing that morning. As he reflec ted, bis faoe naturally elongated and his jaw dropped. Notioing his serious and solemn look, and not remembering ever to have seen him before, one of the brethren took him to be a stranger of a religious turn of mind, and leaned over bis bench and remarked : “ Brother, these are refreshing seasons.” Squiggle gated vecantly at the speaker, and groaned inwardly. The brother pursued— “ It is good to be here.” Squiggle still absorbed in reverie, groaned again. Brother, do you often think of your future slate r At tbe word “stale” the eyes of our Demo cratic friend lost (heir dreamy look, and his jaw clashed into place like a rat trap. State !” he exclaimed, bunging down bis clenched fist on the back of his questioner’s bench with an emphasis that started the wor thy brother greatly— 44 hell I it's gone Black- Republican by 15,000 majority.” A CARD—TO THE LADIES.
