Hon. John McLean.
We have already published the announce
ment of the death of this distinguished States
man and Jurist. We take the following sketch
of his life from a Cincinnati paper:
John McLean was born Mnrek 11, 1786, In
Morris County, N. J. In 1797, when he was
twelve years of age, his father removed to the
North-Wester n Territory, and settled in what is
now Warren County, Ohio. This was only two
years after the victory of Wayne over the In
dians, which opened up the Miami country to
saulement. He had in that early period of
Ohio history but little advantages of edooaiion,
but suoh as they were were assiduously im
proved. In 1808 bo came to Hamilton Coun
ty, nnd was omploysd as a writer in tbo office
of i be County Clerk. Here be determined to
study law, and devoted a portion of his time
to that purpose. He was a member of the first
debaiiog society ever formed in Cincinnati.—
In 1807 he was married to Miss Rebecca Ed
wards, daughter ot Dr. Edwards, of South Car
olina. In the same year be was admitted to
practice law at Lebanon, Ohio. He soon after
became connected with the ohureb, and for the
remainder of his life was a prayerful and de
vout Christian. In 1812 Mr. McLean was
elected to the House of Representatives of the
United States. He was chosen by the Demo
cratic parly of that day, and cordially sustain
ed the war measures of President Madison’s
Administration. He was but twenty seven
ytars of age when he made his appearanos at
Washington aaa member of Congress. In 1814
he was re elected to Congresa.
In 1816 he was unanimously elected a Judge
of the Supreme Court of Ohio. In 1822 he
was appointed by President Monroe Commis
sioner of the Land Offioe. In 1828 he was
nominated by Mr. Monroe as Post master Gen
eral, and held Ibat office umil 1829, when he
was appointed by General Jackson Judge of
the Supreme Court of tbe United States. In
1840 be bad the misfortune to lose his wife,
the severest of all domestic bereavements. In
1843 be was again married, to Mrs. Garretd,
daughter of Israel Ludlow, one of the pioneers
of the oiiy of Cincinnati. In 1848 and in 1852
and I860 he was prominently spoken of for
President of the United States. In the last
named year he received a formidable support
in the Convention, and came near, on tbe first
ballot, beating Colonel Fremont. Had it net
been for his advanced age he would probably
have been nominated for President, instead of
Abraham Lincoln, by the Chicago Conven
tion.
lie was st Washington in attendance upon
the Supreme Court in (he winter just passed,
and while there he had the premonition of that
fatal wearing out of the system to which bs
has since succumbed. He possessed a strong
and hereoulean frame and vigorous constitu
tion, which has oarried him unscathed far be
yond that period which the Psalmist allots to
i he life of man. But the time had at last come
for him to dose his long and prosperous life,
and to go down to tbe grave lull ef years and
full of honors.
Beyond most men he could well say : "Lord,
now lettest Thou thy servant depart in peace,
according lo Iby word; for mine eyes have
seen thy salvation, which Thou bast prepared
before tbe face of all people.”
