L. Denais A Co., on the payment of the in creased duties under the Morrill tariff: To Ihe Collector 0/ the Port qf New York: Sir—We hereby protect against the pay ment of fifteen per oent. charged on seven ca* ses of leather contained in this entry, because the duties on Ihe same kind, description, char acter and quality of leather is not levied and collected in other ports of tho United Ststee, by authority thereof, to wit: in the porta of the States ot South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Louisiana, and others, whereas by the first clause of the eighth section of the first article of the Constitution of tbe United States it Is expressly declared that “ all du ties, Imposts and excises shall be uniform throughout the United States; and also by the fifth clause of the ninth section of the seme article it is declared that “no preference shall be given by any regulation of commerce or revenue to the port* of another.” We pay the •mount oxAted In order to get possession ef the goods, and claim to have tbe full amount refunded. A. L. DENNLS & CO. Death of a Noted Trainer.—“Clint,” fin old negro, end one of the most successful horse trainers in tbe world, died at tbe race course, near Memphis, on tbe 13th inst., of consump* tion. Tbe Arenlacbe save Clint was known to every turfman in the Union, having spent his entire life in the stables of tbe most noted men in the oountry, and hie death will be la mented. To have “ Old Clint” for a trainer was to have the odds in ihe race. For a num ber of years past be was in tbe employ of Mr. W. Roundtree of Memphis. A New Question.—A new question is, whether the seceding States can demand Ibe enforcement of the extraditien treaty with Canada? A business man ef Brownsville. Texas, is alleged to have swindled his credi tors to tbe amount of $140,000. He took re fuge in Canada, and offered to commute with bis creditois for 15 cants on the dollar. They, however, preferred to demand bis arrest un der the extradition treaty, and it remains to be seen whether Canada will recognize the application. Makimoa a Lion or a Negro.—The Cana dians art loinizing the fugitive negro murder er, Anderson, lately set at liberty there. He hat been put under a colored instructor, and attempted to make an address at a public meeting, but “forgot what be intended to say.” After proper training he is to be taken to England, where, as be has dona nothing more than kill man, he will be made muoh of. ^ Hon. Clement C. Clay, late Senator front Alabama, arrived in 8t. Paul on Friday evening. We regret to learn that he ia in a very feeble oondition, but trust the bracing attnoepbere of Minnesota will restore him speedily. He is at tha International, accom« panied by Mrs. Clay, and his brother H. L. Clay. Hie disease is of«bronchisl character, ahd his journey here has been very slow.— St. Paul Pioneer. A leading maxim with almost every politi cal manager is always (0 keep his countenance and never keep his word. We’ll bet a cent that Lincoln wouldn't keep his “countenance" if ha oould avoid it. 'Madam,” said a croes tempered physician to a patient, “if women were admitted ia par adise their longuee would make it a pur gatory.*' “And tome physicians if allowed to practice there,” replied the lady, “would make it a desert.” A Natural Conclusion.—A Dutchman tha other day, reading an account of a meeting, osme to the worde, “tbe meeting then dissolv ed.” Ho oould net define the meaning of tho latter word, eo ho referred to hie dictionary and felt satisfied. In a few minutes a friend came in when llontv said, “Dey must have worry hot wadder acre in New York. I ret an agount of a'meeting trhere all de peoples had melted away.” Cdr* A notorious Abolitionist announces that he will leeture on the gallows.
