Confederate Commissioners Denounce the
Lincoln Government.
Washington, April 12.—Tho Southern Com
missioners to the United States Government
left yesterday for home, Seward having refused
to receive them in their diplomatic character.
They addressed a letter to the President, say
ing that if hostilities occur, on the hesd of his
Administration must rest tke responsibility.—
They repeat, that they had almost daily indi
rect assurances that Fort Sumter would be pos
itively abandoned, and that the Government
efforts would be directed towards peace; but,
instead, under this pretext and assurance, it
bad sent immense armada to bear despatches
and to provision and reinforce the Confederate
Forts. They accuse the Administration of gross
perldity, and state that they will return to an
uissfei people, *%4 express their firm convic
tion that War is inevitable.

uarsTA, April, 1 Jib.—Passengers from
Charleston, this forenoon, announce that firing
Fort Sumter begun at half-past I o'clock
this morning.
Private Dispatch in Confirmation*
Col. John W. Duncan of this city, has kindly
handed us the following dispatch received by
him yesterday;
Mohtoomkrt, April 12—1 am informed on
reliable authority, that Gen. Beauregard open
ed fire from his batteries, on Fort Sumter, at
4} o’clock this morning.

Momtoomkry, April 12.—An extra session of
tho Confederate Congress hss been called to
meet on tho 29th April. Mobile is in a blaze
of excitement and rejoicing. Fifteen guns were
fired to-day in honor of the attack on Sumter.

CXAEH8TO.N, April 12.—The bombardment of
Fort Sumter continues. The Floating Battery
and Stephens’ Battery operating freely—Sum-
tor returning the fire. Three War vessels repor
ted outside the bar.

Momtoomkry, April 12.—Severn guns are be
ing fired in front of the Executive building*
amid great rejoicing, at the attack on Fort
Sumter. Three cheers for Gen. Beauregard,
and three for President Davis. No later Charles
ton news mads public. The Cabinet have been
in session all day. Letters of Marque and Re
prisal will be issued immediately. Gen. Ren-
eau and Ben McCollough have proposed to the
Confederate Government to have 25,000 men in
Washington City wtt$ii ten days, and to take
Lineals and Scott prisoners. McCollough has
10,000 man now in Virginia, and be has already
purchased 10,010 stand of arms.

Nnw Yoax, April 12.—The steamer Vander
bilt was taken to the Navy Yard to-day. It is
supposed she has been chartered oy the Gov
ernment.

River News.
Nash villi, April 11.—The river at this point
continues to rise, with plenty of water for the
largest class steamers.
The only arrival yesterday was the John A.
Fisher from Paducah. She departed again at
IS o’clock.
The Mineetonka leaves for Paducah at 12
o’clock to-day. Captain Sims is in command,
with Doyle and Peeples in the office.

CHAM.MTOS, April II— Midnight.—Th# ex
citement in the city to day has been intense in
oonsequence of the rumors tbatadsmaud would
be mad* for the surrender of Fort Sumter, and
if refused an engagement would take place in
the evening st 8 o’clock.
The demand was made st two o’clock to-day,
and Mesqm. Cbesnut, Ohisolm and Lee were
deputised to carry the message from General
Beauregard to Maj. Anderson at Fort Sumter.
About one thousand persons assembled on
the Battery this morning, anticipating a fight
at eight o’clock.
Two hundred raounfed guards patrolled the
stfunteet the city.
No fight, however, as yet has occurred.
The Harriet Lane has been reported to be off
the bar, snd signals have been displayed by
the guard boat and answered by the batteries.

Items from the Charleston Courier.
To the Ladies.—In consequence of a largo
number of troops being ordered out, the Sur
geon-General respectfully informs the kind
ladies of Charleston that a further supply of
bandages, two and a half and three inches
wide and six yards long, and of lint, will be
acceptable.
He acknowledges, with sincere thanks for
the State, the liberal contribution of $261 by
the ladies for surgical instruments. It has
beta expended advantageously.
An Acceftablk Tokkn.—The very accept
able token, in the shape of a Rifled Cannon,
which we mentioned yesterday, bears the in
scription ;
“ Presented to the Sovereign State of South
Carolina, by one of her citizena residing,
abroad, in commemoration of the 20th Decem
ber, 1860.”
It was accompanied by a good supply of
shells and balls, and apparatus for mounting,
and it has been put in place. Where that
place is it becomes us not st present to re
port.
