BY COUSIN NICJSLT.
One frosljr morning is autumn, m Mr.
Jones ihs carpenter, was going with his ®en
lo work, in the town of Ashby. be met just st
the entrance of lbs town, • f»<* fooed, Ihfnljr
clothed boy, who, after looking at him earn
estly for * b ament, asked,
• • Are you a oarpenter, and do you wish an
appreotioe?"
•• Well, I don’t know ; what’s your name
my lad?” said the oarpenter, with a kind smile.
•* Charley Mason, was the answer.
“ And where is your home, Master Char
ley?” continued Mr. Jones.
Dig teara came into the boy's bright blaok
eyes, and his roioe trembled as he said;
“ i h*ve no home ; my father and mother
both died before I eat remember.”
Mr. Jones thought of his own dear boys,
and he piaeed hia hand kindiy on Charley’s
head, saying, “Poor boy, where hare you lir
ed!”
“ With my uncle, but 1 left his house last
night, determined to etarre before I would be
longer dependent on a man who grudges his
dead brother's child the bread he ate,” and
Charley’S eya burned with a si range light.
The good carpenter wiped away tha tears
from hU eyes with the back of his hand, and
asked f
“ Do you think you can learn to be a car
penter ?”
*« I think 1 can fry,” said Charley, proudly
drawing htosetf Op.
“Ah! I like that; and if that is to be
your watchword, I think you and 1 can gat on
nicely; but I suppose you’re bad no break
fast,” continued Mr. Jones, “ so wo must seed
Tom back to show you the house, where you
will stay till we eome homo to dinner, and
then we will talk a little about being a car
penter.”
Tom, a little colored boy, who did errands
for Mr. Jones, readily went back with Char
Icy, taking himself the little bundle lied up in
an old blue handkerchief, which contained all
Charley’s earthly possessions. Mr.?. Jones
proved as kiud as her husband, and the poor,
(ired, hungry boy was soon enjoying u bourni •
tul break fa s*.
When Mr. Jones cauie home, he had a long
talk *ith Charley, who finally became liisap
prentice. He was to work four years for his
feed and clothes, having besides the privilege
of attending school four mooths in each year.
“ This isn’t much lime for learning," said
Charley to himself that night, “but 1 guets I
cto get a chance to learn someth tag out of
school ; auyhow, /can try.” And ho did try,
and succeeded so well that Mr. Joues said to
him at the close of the first winter, “well
Charley, tha master says you are ono of the
heat scholars iu school, aud be thinks we’ll
make something of you by and by, with that
watchword of youra; but, roy boy, do you
thiuk you will like work aa well at itudy ?”
“ No, sir; but I’ll work that I may study,”
was the answer.
All through the spring, the summer and the
autumn, Charley worked, oaruestly, faithful
ly, and at the close of eaoh day, tired as he
was, he always contrived to ge* a little timo
for ntudy.
“ Say, Charley,” said Willie Jones one
night, “ all the boys say you are a dull prig ;
what makes you so eober? Why don’t you
oorne out of an evening, and not stay moped
up in the house with a book all the lime ?”
“I mast itudy,” said Charley gravely. “I
shall want to go to college by and by.”
“Opobi pobl” laughed Willie, “that’s a
good one; why father can’t send any one of
us to college, and how are you going, when
you don’t have anybody to help you ?
“ Perhaps, I never ean, but * I oan try.”
“I don’t wonder father calls it your watch
word ; but do you ever expeot to know enough
to go to college ?
“ Yes, if I live,” said Charley seriously.
“But what does a carpenter want to go to
college fdr t^Jperalsted Willie , •* 1 dont see
“ Willie,” said Charley, you mustn’t ask me
any more questions ; but I’ll tell you, I don’t
always mean to be n carpenter.”
Week after week, month after month, year
after year, Charley Mason kept on his course
never unfkithful; he yet worked ae though
he had some higher objeot in view, and night
after night found him beading over his books,
heedless of the sport in whleh the boys tried
to make him join. The four years came to an
end, and Mr. Jones now gave him wages for
his labor, saying, “1 know you will be worth
two hands to me, Charley/' and so he was,
working and studying, now harder than ever,
for he was fast reaching the point at whioh he
aimed.
It was well known now that Charley had
decided to be a minister, and that be iris now
at work to earn money to assist him la bis
studies. About the time that his term as sn
apprentice expired, Mr. Jones contrscted to
build a ohuroh in Ashby, and of oourte Char
ley was employed upon it. One dsy while
they were at work ou tks roof, Willis Jones
called out :
“ Say, Charley, abode would think you ex
pected to ptaiNb in this eliuroh, by the way
you put ou those shingles.”
“Stranger things than that have happen
ed,” said Charley, quietly. A laugh from tbo
workmen, and (ten the incident was forgot

Charley achieved hia darling plan of enter
ing college ; though la doing so, ha overcame
many an obstacle at whioh even stouter hearts
would have auailed, but he said, “God helps
those who help themselves, and I can try.”
His college life was a hard one, fir he was
still dependent on hit exertions, and it would
make your heart aohe to hear of his priva
lions, yet he nsvercomplalnsd, bet kept earuj
estly to his one purpose, and nobly has he ac-
