O. P. MORTON.
It will be observed that on the 25th of April,
Gov. Morton offered to meet Gov. Magoffin at
Jeffersonvillo next day—the 26th. On the
26th Magoffin telegraphed that he could not
go to Jeffersonville, which was just across the
river, but would meet Gov. Dennison in per
son, or by Commissioners, at the Spencer
House, where Morten would please meet him.
Od arriving in this city, Gov. Morton receiv

Frankfort, Kentucky. ^
Exbcutivr Officb, April 27, 1861. j
Hon. O. P. Morion and Hon. Wm. Dennison,
Governors of Indiana and Ohio :
Gxntlxmbn—Col. Tbos. L. Crittenden is
hereby fully authorised to represent mein tbe
Conference to be held at 4 o’clock to-morrow
evening at the Spencer House in Cincinnati.
Respeotfully, B. MAGOFFIN.
Tbe following was handed Gov. Morton in
this city :
Cincinnati, April 80, 1861,
To ths lion. O. P. Morton, Governor of Indi
ana i
Dear Sir—I have been instructed by the
State of Kentucky, to solicit tha co-operation
of yourself and the Hon. Wm. Dennison, Gov
ernor of the State of Ohio, in an effort to
bring about a truce between the General Gov
ernment and tbe acceded States until tbe
meeting of Congress in extraordinary session,
in tbe hope that the action of that body may
point out tbe way of a peaceful solution of
our national troubles.
I have the honor to be, very respectfully
and truly, your obedient servant,
T. L. CRITTENDEN.
The "Commercial" adds:
A dispatch was at once (Thursday) sent
Magoffin, who was in Frankfort, by Col. Crit
tenden, requesting bis presence here. A reply
waa received stating that he would come in a
special train. It was expected that this (rain
would enabla Magoffin to meet Governors Den*
nison and Morton at the Burnet House by
eleven o’clock at night.
Nothing was heard of him up to four o’clock
J resterday morning, when Governor Morton
eft for Indianapolis, whence he forwarded the
following ootnmunioaiion to the Governor of
Kentuoky :
State or Indiana, \
Executive Department, j
Indianapolis, May 1st, 1861.
Dean 8ir— In reply to tke note of Cel. T.
L. Crittenden of yeeterday’a date informing
me that he bad bean instructed by you to so
licit tbe co-operation of Gov. Dennison and
myalf "in an effort to bring about a truoe be
tween* the General .Government 'and tbe se
ceded States, until the meeting of Congress in
extraordinary session," it becomes my duty
to state, that I do not recognise tbe right of
any 8tato to set aa a mediator between the
Federal Government and a rebellious State.—
I hold that Indiana snd Kentucky are but in
tegral parts of tbe Nation, and as sueh are sub
ject to tba Government of the Untied States
and bound to obey ike requisitions of the Pres
ident issued in pursuance of bia Constitution
al authority.
That It ia tba duty of every Stale Govern
ment to prohibit, by all means in its power,
tbe transpotation from within its limits of arms,
military store* and provisions to any State in
open rebellion and hoeiility to the Govern
ment of the United States, and toTestrain her
eitixeaa from all acts giving aid and comfort
to tbe enemy ; that there is no ground in tbs
Constitution midway between the Federal Gov
ernment and a rebellious State upon wblob
another State eaa stand, bolding both in
cheek ; that a State must take her stand upon
the sae side ar Iks otbsr; and 1 iavoks tbs
Stats at Kentuoky by all the eaersd ties that
bind us togtthsr, to take her stand with In
diana, promptly and efficient on the side of the
Union.
The action ef Ike Federal Government ia
tke proof nt cosiest being strictly in accordance
with tke CeneUtaUea and tkalaw ef the land,
and entertain if tke views abovs indicated, I
am compelled to deeliae the eo operation so
licited by you.
I take this occasion to renew tke expression
of my earnest desire that Kentuoky may re
main la tba Union, and that the isdatta po
litical, nodal aad commercial rotations which
sxist between bar aad Indiana may never be
disturbed bat be cemented snd strcngtksasd
Tbs "Commercial" proceeds: It appears
tbat Magoffin did ranch Covington, accompan
ied by tbe Hob. John J. Crittenden, about
midnight Tuesday, hot that no prevision had
been mads to bring him across tbs river.
Learning yesterday after breakfast, that
Dennison and Merton had geaa home, Denni
son having taken ths first train to Columbus,
be relumed to Frankfort.
And thus ends the proposed eonsultaticn of
the three Governors.
