Hie opponent, and patron of cats, possessed one of the fell* ape eies that no dog could kill in ten minutes — Finally, to settle the dispute, a bet was made of twenty-seven dollars, (all the loose change tbe cat man had,) on tbe tight—time, ten min utes. The preliminaries were all settled, and tbe combat was fixed ftr the next day. Pune tual to appointment, early in the morning, the dog man appeared on tbe battle ground with three or four feroeioai-looking bull dogs. The ont man was also found ready to meet his ap pointment. The latter had prepared a tight box, with a movable cover, into whioh he had placed the ca.. Tbe judges gathered round the spot, and when all was declared ready tbe cat fighter proceeded to raise tbe cover. But to the as tonishment of tho man with the oat-eating dogs, puss failed to come to time. Stepping up to tbe box with a suspicious air, he discov ered that he was badly sold—the cat was dead ! Chagriued at the trick, tbe proprietor of the dogs addressed the other : “If you are mean enough to take those •takes, lake them.” The proprietor of tho cats did take them, and the proprietor of (be dogs left discomfit ted Encourage Home Literature!!
