Propable Fatal Rencontre on Board a Steamer, A serious difficulty ocoursdat ths dinner ta ble on board the steamer St. Johns, yesterday, as she was coming up on her regular trip from Florida. Among the passengers were Mr. It. Kerr Elliott, of Fayette county, Fla., and Er. Staggers, of the same State, but of what coun ty we were unabie to learn. Sharp words passed between ths parties at various times during the trip, and yesterday, while sit ting opposite each other at the dinner tab!e, the quarrel was resumed by 8taggers, with vary abusive language, lie finally arose, with a case knife in his hand, leaning over towards Elliott, when ths latter deliberately drew a pistol and fired. Staggers fell, tbe bell hav ing entered above the nipple, and passed, it is thought, through tbe lungs. Ha bled prousely from the wound, and was well nigh exhausted when the boat rsaohed the oi ly. He wes Immediately taken to a hotel and every attention given, though wa hear the wound Is likely to prove fatal. Tbe pueengvra all concur in placing tbe wounded men in the wrong, and in juaiilyng of act of Elliott; i ndeed, they say b§ had borne with Staggers until all patienoe was ex hausted, and bad tried in every way to avoid him. 8tsggers, it is also due to say, had been drinking freely from thotimohe went on boerd- Upon reaching the eity, Mr. Elliott deliver, ed himself ap to ths oivil authorities and sta led the fsots; but as there was no appearance against him, he was told to depart. lie Is en route to Montgomary, to aocept a position in the army—Jot.
