Of course, I suppose that both are equally well bred and sensible. The lot* ter has been accustomed to help herself; to wssist in household duties; and to weigh well •very cent she spends. Sueb a girl, when married, is a help to a husband, instead of b*i»g a tax on him. She has no absurd Ideas of position to keep up. If she has taste, she will look ts well in ohlnts as others do in iilks. She will get up sn entertainment, and ytu will be astonished how littl# it oosls. Hsr servants will stay with her fer years, beoause she is just to them, sod not exacting. Every* thing in her house will be neat and orderly, for she will overlook every thing herself. With suoh n wife, n man can livs on two-thirds of what he would otherwise spend ; and from these savings alone he will grow comparatively wall off in time.” “ X know who sat for that pioture, old fel low. Now fire sway at my Mary.” *' It is not of Miss Townsend, individually, I shall apeak, it is of the class—’ 9 “ Well, go ahead no need for apologies.” “A girl, brought up with the notion that she is to be rob, must be almost more than mortal not to imbibe notions of her own im portance. She has plenty of servants about hsr. She never learna the value of money. What are luxuries to others become, through long use, only necessaries to her. Jiew is it posttible she should ssesps being selfish ?— Tbs worst of it is, she is not conscious of this selfishness, sod whan married, if not petted excessively, thinks herself neglected.” “ You don’t flatter.” Look at the money question also. Shs is One of several children, and though her fath er is rich, his fortuns, when divided among tbem all, will not be sufficient of itself to keep her end her husband in style, which she has been accustomed to lit*—” “ But her hnsbaad will have some inoome, and her fortune, when it comes, will help that out.” “ There is nothing lilts figures. Let me put a esse. Suppose the farther is worth a hun dred thousand dollars, and has fiva children, which makes the portion of eaoh twenty thou- hand dollars.” “ Very well.” “Now when a girl, with twenty thousand in expectancy marries, she spends, generally a thousand a year and more than if she had no fortune in prospect. If twenty years elapse, before her portion falls to her, the Whole of it has been apent before it arrives, and twenty years is not, in the average, an excessive time to have to wait. But, count, the twenty thousand will have teen expended long before.” “ But you don’t mean to say that we will spend a thousand a year mors than you and Aune?” “ 1 don’t, mean to make any personal appli cation of my remarks, Harry. That I leave to yonrsslf.” “ If I Vitn't the best natured fellow in the world, I should get angry. But 1 know It’s all nonsense, what you’ve been saying.
