The Memphis *' Avalanche” of the 25th in
stant has the following:
We were shown last night a letter from a
bearer of diipatobet from the Souibern Com
missioners in Europe to a gentleman high in
authority here, which ooniaine the moat
cheering intelligence. The bearer of the dis
patches is well known in this city as a gentle
man entirely reliable. He landed in Canada,
and making his way through that provinos to
Chicago, succeeded in eluding the vigilance
of the Blaok Rtpublioans and reaohed Nash
ville yesterday. He immediately dispatched
a speoial messenger to Gen. Pillow, with a
letter to the effeot that bis documents intend
ed for President Davis convey the cheering
intelligence that the sum of $2,000,000 has
been offered to be advanced upon our ootton
crop alone, and that the Southern Confederacy
will soon be acknowledged aa one of the Pow
ers of the Earth. Tbe letter also says that
England and France have dispatohed twenty
additional ships of the line to our shores, end
that the blockade will be raised by tbe 1st of
November. He says that England and Franca
ere with us in sentiment, and that our flag
will soon be recognized by their governments.
Tbe foregoing, important eud cheering as it
is to the patriotio cause, we believe to be per
fectly reliable, and every heart can but re
joice at the speedy solution of our difficulties.

One of Jeff. Davie’ privateers, the Savan
nah, of Charleston, to whioh tbe first letter of
rnsrque was issued, after a running fight, was
captured on the 3d inst., by the U. S. brig
Perry, about fifty miles from Charleston Har
bor. Tbe SaYaunab, a schooner rigged ves
sel of ttifty-four tons burden, was formerly
engaged ae a pilot boat. At tbe time of her
capture she was armed with nn 18-pounder
amidships, and had on board au ample sup
ply of shot and shell, grape and canister,
while her crew were provided with knives,
outlassess, pistols, rifles, &o. She was also
well provisioned for a protracted oruiae, al
though at the time of her capture she had
been out of port only about thirty-six hours,
during whioh (eriod, however, she had taken
as a prize the brig Joseph, of Rockland, Me.,
and sent her to Georgetown, 8. C* It appears
that the piratical craft left Charleston harbor
on Sunday, June 2d, under the command of
Captain Baker, with a crew of twenty-five
aten.
On the following day she foil in with the
brig Joseph, from Cardenas, Cuba, with a
oargo of Sugar, consigned to Welch & Co., of
Pniladelpbia. By an artful arrangement of
tbe colors on board the Savannah, the captain
of the brig was induced to believe that the
piratical craft was in distress and went on
board, when he was held aa a prironer, and
his vessel seized as a prize, and as such a
prize crew of eight men waa put on board to
take her into Georgetown harbor. Before tbe
Savaunah and her prize had fairly parted
oompany, tha brig Perry hove in eight, and
by disguising her real obaraoter, her guns be
ing purposely run baok and her port hoist
closed, she was doubtless taken for another
prospective prize by the piraters, who imme
diately made all sail they could, and ettne
within a short distance of tha Perry before
they discovered that they were sold, when
they put about and tried hard to make good
their esoape. The Perry gave ebase, and
fired several shots to bring the pirate to.—
The latter fired shots in return, which passed
over the Perry without doing soy damage.
After a ohase of About six hours, the Perry
hauled up close to the piratical schooner, and
orderad her to heave to, wbieb the did, when
men from the Perry, under oommaud of Lieut*
enanl J. N. Miller, boarded her. The officers
and crew of tbe Savannah then came for
ward and gave up their aide arms and surren
dered themselves as prisoners. They were
taken on board the Perry and put in irons, and
the Savannah waa placed in oherge of a priza
and orew, with Midshipman McCook in com
mand, who brought bar to this port, wbioh
they reached on Saturday; while the brig
Perry transferred her prisoners to tbe U. 8.
frigate Minnesota, lying off Charleston bar.
On board tbe privateer was a young man hai’-
ing from New York, who represented that he
was impressed into the service of the pirates
while in an unconscious state. He was brought
to this port in the schooner. He stated that
there were originally thirty-two men on board,
but eight effected their escape before the ves
sel sailed on her privateering oruiee.
