Anecdote ef Jefifereei DavIs.
Editor Missibsipfian I desire to relate
aa incident in the lift of President Davis
whisk may not be without interest to your
readers, as revealing a beautiful trait of his
oharaetsr.
I am acquainted with a mau who was a pri
vate soldier in the First Mississippi Regiment,
under Col. Davis, in lbs wsr with Moxioo.—
Tho dsy Gen. Ttylor reached tho Walnut
Springs, tho dsy befort tho memorable battle
of Monterey, late in tho evening after a long
march, the private in question was taken with
something like a congestive skill, and lay down
beside the road nearly senseless.
It was now considered very dangerous for
ths soldiers to fall behind the rear guard, on
account of Mexican Lancers and Gasrillas
who were dodging after our army, killing and
robbing tny who might be separated from the
main body. The main body of tbs army had
already passed by; a well known Colonel in
company with another officer came up, hailed,
demanded who was thers and what he was
doing T The siok man gave him the name of
the Regiment and oompauy to which he be*
longed, and told him that he was very sick.—
The Colonel with sn oath told him he ••reck
oned it tcat about at near from that place to hell
at any other," and posted on and left him ly*
ing there.
pFAo vat the Colonel f I forbear to tell you.~
Presently Col. Jeff Davis came up iu company
with an offioer, hailed and received the same
answer as was given to the first Colonel. Da
vis ealled a halt—said U would net do to leave
him there—got down examined and found him
to be very siok indeed, even too siok to sit on
a horse—asked him if ht had any relations
“ iu the compeny” of which be was s member,
end who be “ would have left to take ear# of
him.” He selected bis cousin, a Lieutenant
in the oompany. Davis said be would send
him beck to stay with him; which he did.—
And than tying his horst to a ohaparal bush
for the sick soldier to rids, when he should be
able. Col. Davis went from there to the camp
on foot, a distance of five miles. The sick
men lived, got well, was at ths battle of Buena
Vista, and is now Csplain of a company which
is ready to fight in defense of ths Confederate
Stales, when its servioss are needed The
Lieutenant who was unable to gat the sick
man into camp before 10 o’clock at night—is
now a Lieutenant in a volunteer oompany of
Southern troops at Harper’s Fsrry, or near
there. R. K. GRAY.

A Trip to Washington.
Last Sunday Lieu:. Col. Thomas H. Taylor,
C. S A , of Kentucky, left Ibis oily for Wash
ington, bearing a letter from President Davis
to President Linooln, understood to bean offi
cial notification of the course that will be
pursued by this Government in the event of
the execution of other criminal punishment of
the prisoners taken on board tbe privateer Sa
vannah. Col. T. proceeded to the head quar
ters of Gsn. Bsauregerd, by whom, it is said,
ho was furnished with a leltor to Gsn. Mc
Dowell, in oommand of tho Lincoln foroos on
this side of tho Potomoo. Ho then proceeded
to Fairfax C. H., whore ho was furnished with
sn escort of twelve men and two non-oommts*
sioned officers, under command of a Lieutant,
with a white flag. Thenoe he proceeded to
wards Arlington, encountering a squadron of
the enemy’s dragoons when within about
seven miles of that plaeo, to whoso command
ing officer he mads known his errand. Ar
riving at arlington, General Soolt was notified
of his presence, and sent a carriage to oon-
voy him to Washington, where he arrived
about nine o’dook Monday night, and deliv
ered his letter to General Scott—Linooln not
being visible. Col. T. wos then reoonveyod
to Arlington, whore ho spent the night, and
the next day was escorted back through the
enemies’ lines. Gsn. 8. informed him that
an answer to the letter of whioh he was bearer
would bo forwarded to this sity by one of his
officers, and requested Col. T. to deliver his
44 kind regards” to Generals Los and Boaurt-
gard. Col. T., while in tho snsmiss’ linos,
was treated with all the courtesies of ths pre
fsssion.— Richmond Whig.
