It will be seen from the sketch that
the Hag is to he a blue “Union” on a red
field; the stars being white, the national
colors of red, white and blue, being thus
reproduced. There are 1‘ouv stars dispon
ed in the form of a square within 1 l.c
Union.
The Committee have chosen the do
sign from a great number and variety
submitted to them. The collections of
the designs offered to the Committee is
‘quite curious—beehives, snakes, temple-
of liberty, and all sorls of devices ligu
ring among them.
The design adopted, it is understood,
is almost unanimously approved bv Con
gress, with the exception of the stars and
their arrangement, for which some ofthe
members propose to substitute the South
ern Cross. It is understood that the oth
er parts of the design will certainly be
adopted by Congress.—Richmond Esam*

In a letter written in 1779 to Joseph
Reed, “President of Pennsylvania,” Geo.
Washington, in writing of extortioner*,
who were profiting on the public neces
sity, said : “It gives me sincere pleasure
to find that the Assembly is so well dis
posed to second your endeavors in bring
ing those murderers of our cause, the mu
nopolizers, forestalled, and engrossers,
to condign punishment. It is much to
be lamented that each State,Jlongere this,
has not hunted them down as pests to sc
ciety, and the greatest enemies we have
to the happiness of America. I would
to God that some of the most atrocious
iu each State was hung in gibbets upon
a gallows five times as high as the one
prepared for Hantan. No punishment,
in my opinion, is too severe for the man
who can build his greatness upon hi-<
country’s ruin.”
