Exchange of Prisoners.
The Washington National Intelligencer, of
the 18th instant, contains the following iu
relation to the mission of the late Commis
sioners appointed by the United States Gov
ernment, to visit the prisoners in the South :
The Hod. Hamilton Fish and the Rev. Bish ; ■
op Ames bare returned to Washington, and,
it is stated, have made a report to the Gov
ernment respecting their mission to relieve
Union prisoners in the South. They repairx
ed to Fortress Monroe and made known their
commission to the Confederate authorities at
Norfolk, by whom the matter was referred lo
Richmond. A reply came refusing to the
Commissioners admission to the Confederate
territory, but expressing readiness to nego
tiate for the general exohknge of prisoners.
Our Commissioners opened negotiations which
resulted in perfect success. An equal ex
change was agreed on, but the Confederates
had three hundred more prisoners than our
Government; but, with commendable mag
nanimity, they proposed to release those also
on parole, if our Government would agree to
release three hundred of their men that might
hereafter fall into our hands. This noble'*
commission of Secretary Stanton, therefore,
has its ample reward. A genearl “jail de»
lelivery” of our Boldiers will occur through
out the South, and they will soon be rejoio-
ing in liberty regained. Sinoe the olose of
this negotiation with their offer to give liber
ty to those surplus three hundred Union sol
diers, the Confederates have had a reverse,
and lost thousands of prisoners at Roanoke
Island and Fort Donelson. The question is,
shall we be like magnanimous and give up cn
parole the large surplus we now have.
A Gallant Deed.
The New Orleans Delta of the 23d Feb., re
cords the following instanoe of the heroism of
a German citicen of Louisiana. His deed is
worthy to be ranked with that of Jackson, the
slayer of the marauder Ellsworth :
A few days ago a number of launches from
the blockading squadron in the Sound suc
ceeded in capturing several fishing smaoks eff
the fishing banks. One of these snacks hap.
pened to be the property of an honest Ger
man, who, after surrendering his vessel, pro-
- MAdcd it
fboj
.thd _ . _
■Ion of the musket of one of the Yankees, sud
denly brought it in juxtaposition with his
cranium, fired and blew the top of his head
off. He then charged bayonet on the other
Yankee, who surrendered, and permitted
himself to be tied with a rope. The German
then waited until it was dark, and setting all
sail, slipped off from the squadron, and sail
ing up the lake, reaohed Fort Pike in safety,
bearing the stars and stripes, union down,
from his mast head. He delivered to the
commandant of the fort one dead and one live
Yankee—the former was buried at the fort,
and the latter was brought over by bis captor
and delivered to Gen. Lovell. All honor to
the brave Teuton. We regret we have not
his name, but the facts here stated are rouch
ed for by the mo3t responsible persons. The
honest fisherman deserves, and we hope will
receive, some substantial token of apprecia
tion and consideration of his vigorous and ef
fective mode of disposing of Y'ankee invaders.
