llte Stnmpeders again—Prisoners
Hrou'jlit In.
The Knoxville ‘‘Register” of the 20ih inst.
gives an account of the arrival of Cap'. Ash
by’s command with 423 prisoners capture^
in Campbell county—East Tennessee rene
gades making their way to Kentucky to join
the cut-throat invaders of their homes.
The tory stampeders consisted of eix or
seven hundred men—most of them young, ro
bust and athletic fellows. About three huu*.
dred were armed with rifles aBd shot-guns;
the rest with pistols, kuivea and rude wea
pons.
The attacking force consisted of about 70
cavalry, under command of Capt. Henry Ash
by, including Capt. Gillespie’s company, un
der command of Lieut. King. Capt. Brad
ley’s company had been detailed to Big Creek
Gap, to guard that pass.
The leader of the stampeders, Capt. Capps,
of Grainger county, was killed. Among the
prisoners captured were many prominent
men from 'he vicinity of Kuoxville, who had
voluntarily come foiward and taken the oath
of allegiance to the Southern Confederacy.
•The killed and wounded among the enemy
amounted to about one hundred.
p. S.—Since writing the above, these pris
oners have passed through here en route to
MilledgeviUe to he confiued there. A meaner
looking set of men will seldom be found in
any country. The Bull Run Yankees would
make a very respectable lookiDg parly if
compared with these traitors.
Rev. Mr. Crumley.
We ebeerfully lay before our readers the
letter of Rev. W. J. Parks, ia whieh he ad
ministers a rasping to Mr. Crumley aud the
editors of this journal. We differ, however,
radically with him in the position he assumes,
and hope to be able to give our views on this
matter in a day or two—whish we regret our
space will cot bow allow us to do.
Noble Worne*.
We me? a gentleman the other day who in-
foremd us that he had reoenily passed thro’
several counties in North-West Georgia, and
constantly found women in the fields engaged
in planting corn—some ploughing open the
long furrows, and others covering with the
hoe the corn which the children had dropped.
When asked why it was that they were so
engaged, they answered in every instance,
•*ibe men folks here have all gone to the war,
and we iutenu to make our bread.
The husbands, brothers and sons of such
women ean never be subjugated
After such examples of self-sacriSeing pa
triotism on the part of the women of the
country, the women of our towus and cities
should'redouble their efforts to furnish hos
pital stores, aDd administer relief to the sick
and wennded soldier?

Dace for all, and once to ail, parmit ms to

That letter ot Bro. Crumley’* which “Cher
okee” reviewed was, in ary jadgawat, and
that of many others, a very unfortunate one.
A worthy brother minister here insisted that
it was a forgery, or a hoax, as Bro. C. could
not, in his judgment, have been so imprudent
as to have written that letter. 1 writ# as an
old minister, and demur and enter my solemn
protest against any of our ministers, who are
employed as chaplains in the Confederate
service, beoomiug a censor of our public men
in the newspapers. If others do it, they should
not, for suoh obvious reasons that I will not
siate them. I hope it will not be repeated,
at least by any ohaplain from the Georgia
Conference. “Caerokee” wrote liken Indy,
and if she had just taken off her silk gloves
I should not have written this The editors
of the Southern Confederacy take doubtful
ground, especially if they think chaplain*
should exercise such privileges.
