The Battle of Pea Ridge.
The ** Richmond Inquirer," of the l*th Inst,
says: “From Gen. Van Dorn’s report of tbe
fight at Pea Ridge, Arkansas, that engag*-
ment appears in its irue light. Beyond a
doubt it wa* a brilliant and hard-fought bat
tle, resulting iu a complete victory for the
Confederate arms Tbe enemy had set out on
a march of invasion, with the avowed deter
ruination to subjugate Arkansas and capture
Fort Smith. But after tbe shock of an eu-
eoQBter with Van Dorn he was forced to fall
back into Missouri, leaving four hundred
prisoners in our hands, and three thousand
killed and wouoded on the field. The total
abandonment of their enterprise of subjuga
tion is the most conclusive evidence in the
world that the enemy was completely worst
ed by Gen. Van Dorn.
How Bs.v McCulloch was Killso. —A cor
respondent of the St. Louis “Democrat,” in

a slight elevation, by Peter Pelican, a private
in company B, Fifty-sixth Illinois. The at
tack Jn which the ubiquitous Ben was taken
off was led by Captain Miller. McCulloch

The Report of the Committee on the Affair
ot Roanoke Island.
The committee Las published a report,
whieh satisfactorily establishes the fact that
the disaster ^t Roanoke was the unavoidable
consequence of the action and orders of tbe
Government at Richmond. The following
paragraph presents the conclusion of the Com
mittee :
General Wise, finding that his wriueu ap
peals lot aid In the defenses of the island to
headquarters at Norfolk and to the Depart
ment at Richmond were neglected andureated
with indifferenoe, repaired tu person to Rich
mond, aud called upuu the Secretary of War,
and urged iu the most importunate manner
the absolute necessity ot strengthening the
defenses upon that Island with additional
meD, armament aad amunition. The Secre
tary of War replied verbally to his appeals
for reinforcements, that he had not the men
to spare for his command. General Wise
urged upon tbe Secretary that General Huger
bad about 15,000 men in front of Norfolk, ly
ing idle in camp for eight months, and that a
considerable portion of them could be spared
for the defence of the rear of Norfolk, and
especially as his (General Wise’s) district
supplied Norfolk and his army with nearly
or quite all of hio corn, pork and forage, that
reinforcements at Roanoke Island were as
absolutely nesessaryto the defence at Norfolk
as forces in its from, and that particular or
special posts spould not be allowed to monop
olize nearly aTtTtae men, powder aud supplier.
The reply to all his urgent appeals for the
means of defence, General Wise, on the 22d
of January, received the following military
order, No. 17 :
‘‘Brigadier General Henry A. Wise, Pro
visional Army, will immediately proceed to
Roanoke Island, North Carolina, and assume
oommaud of the Confederate States troops at
that place.
“ By command of the Secretary of War .:
[8igned] •* JOHN WITUERS.
“ Assistant .Adjutant General. ’’
It is apparent to the commitee, from the
correspondence on file of General Wise with
the Secretary of War, General Huger, his eu
perior officer, the Governor of North Caroli
na, and oi her persons, that be was fully aliya
to the importance of Roanoke Island, and has
devoted his jrbole lime and energies and
meaus to the delensps of ihql position : and
that he is no way responsible for the uufor^
lunate disaster which betel our foroes on that
island on the 7th aud 8th of February. But
the oommiltee cannot say the same in refer
ence to the efforts of the Secretary of War
and the commanding officer at Norfolk, Gen
era) Hqgpf.
It is apparent that the island cf Roanoke
was important for the defense of Norfolk, aud
that Ueueral Huger had under his command
at that point upwards of fifteen thousand men.
a large supply of armament aud ammuuiiioo,
and could have thrown, in a few hours, a
large reinforcement uptin Roanoke Island,
and that himself aud the Secretary of War
had timely notice of the entire inadequacy of
tbe defenses, tbe want of men and munitions
of war, and the threatening atiidude of the
enemy But General and the Secre
tary of War paid no practical attention to
those urgent appeals of General Wise, sent
forward none of his important requisitions,
and permitted General Wise and his incon
siderable force to remain to meet at least fif
teen thousand pieo, well armed and equipped.
If the Becrfli^ry of aqd the commaud
ing general qt Norfolk had not the means to
reinforce General Wisp, why was hp not or
dered to abandon his position and save his
command? but, upon the CODtrary.he was re
quired to remain qa4 sacrifice bis command,
with no means in his insulated position to
make his escape in Qase of defeat. The com
miuee, from the testimony, are therefore con
strained to report that, whatever blame or
responsibility is justly attributed to any one
for tbe defeat of our troops at Roanoke Island,
on the 8th of February, 1862, should attach
to Major-General B. Huger and the late Sec
rotary of War—J. I*. Benjamin.
All of which is respectfully submitted.

it, as under different circumstances we might

boat loads of wounded have passed l'adueah,
and private aecoante put tbe actual loss ot
the enemy at 18,000, inelnding 4,000 prison
