The New Orleans “ Dolts” of the 2Slb utt. j
relates the following:
On Saturday last, a party landed above j
Oarrolton troni the enemy’s ships, and pro- j
ceeding to the abandoned fortifications, in- j
soeeted them and tore no a smali Cmfedernte |
flag, which they found flying over the works.
Returning down the Levee, the office s met
a family of ladies end children, accompanied
by their colored servant. The Federals, ad
dressing themselves first to the ladies ex
pressed a hope that the presence of the fleet
was not a cause of fear to them. We will ri -
late verbatim the conversation that, ensued :
Mrs B.—That, sensation, air, is unknown to
us here.
Officer.—Madam, may 1 ssk you if there is
any Union sentiment here?
Mrs. B.—None, sir, that I am aware oi—
certainly none among the ladies.
Officer.—Then we may take it for granted
there is none among either s x, as the tadies
generally go with the gentlemen on political
questions.
Mrs B —! am confident, sir, your mleience
as to the eiiLre absence of any Union sent-
inent is correct. As to the ladies following
the gentlemen on political questions I beg
you to understand that however it may be in
your section, the ladies here advocate that
only which is just and boU >rab!e.
Officer (turning his att ntion to one ot the
servants).—Well, Sis, can yon tell me if all
the troops ha vo left yet ? ,
Nancy being for a moment q net, the lady
said: “ Nancy, why don’t you answer your

Gen. Leadbetter.
LETTER FROM MAJ. 3. F. eOSES.
Cartkbsvillk, Ga., Mty 7, 1862.
Editors Confederacy: lam mortified and
astonished to hear so many reports tending
to censure the conduct of Brig. Gen. Lead-
better, in the recent affair at Bridgeport. We
should be slow to give credit io such reports
and to believe that those in high authority
are disloyal and deficient in judgment.
Those who make it their profession to com
plain and spit vituperation and abase, are of
ten without argument. 1 know the sun dota
not shine upon one more true and loyal one
more devoted to the cause of the South than
Gen. L.. and know that whatever may now
appear straoge and unaccountable in his con
duct, will be found to be what he deemed
most calculated to advance our cause.
The charge of intoxication is simply false.
Bespeotfully,
B. F. JONES.

Richmond Enquirer, the organ of the Amin-

These articles we publish in accordance
