be furnished with a permit signed by their
owner or employer, or Provoet Marshal.
Owners or employers slaves or of fres persons

longer time than four hour, after nine e’.look
at night, and the pass must designate the
business er the place er plaees te be visited
by the servant.

“lickson his given Shields an awful whip
ping, capturing one regiment and hia artil
lery, and driving him miles down the Shen
andoah. Fremont appeared on the opposite
banks of North and Shenandoah rivers. Our
victory to-day over Shields is compete. If
Gen. Jackson had reinforcements, he would
have all the enemy. Oar ioss is very heavy,
but the enemy’s is tremendous. Our cavalry
are still in pursuit. Fremont crossed North
River with a small force at Rockland Mills,
(Augusta county, Virginia )
Second Diepalch,—Our loss yesterday is
about 200—to-day, much heavier. Will give
you any news additional that comes to band.

Third Diipaich.—Fremont is falling back
and blockading the road. Jackson is press
ing Shields. Urge forward the reinforce
ments, g) that he may follow up his successes

The Herald of the 7th is received. It gives
the names of eleven officers, (Confederates,)
who, with 230 privates, it says were made
priaoners of war at the late battle. The offi
cers above the rank of Lieutenant, are Col.
Lightfoot, 221 N. Carolina, Lieut. Col. Lsng
do., Msj Graybill, 28ih Georgia, Maj. Hub
bard, 8th Alabama, and Capt. Mays, of 8.
Carolina.
A dispatch to Secretary Wells, dated the
Cth, announces the occupation of Fart Pil
low by the Federal troops.
A dispatch dated Paduaah the oik, says
Col. Noble, with nearly his entire command,
are under marching orders down the Ohiu
livt-r, and will leave the next day.
The Herald contains Liverpool dates to the
28s.li. The London Morning Post understands
that the demand of the United States Gov
ernment for the restoration of the Emilie St.
Pierre cannot be complied with.
The London Times thinks Butler’s rule of
New Orleans exceedingly harsh and severe,
and calculated to make the raising of the
blockade valaoless The Post is very bitter
on Butler’s decrees, and says not even the
Austrians or Russians ever issued more se
vere decrees. Cotton has advanced ^J.
