The Great Battle.
CONTINUATION OF THE ENEMY'S BETREaT.
Th iaet acc junta which we published yes
terday of McClellan's situation afforded an
other lisp’ay of the energy of this comm&S'
i der aud the dexterity of his retreat. Tues-
; d&y morning had given unmistakable indica-
: tions :ha* his paramount anxiety was to se
cure his retreat, and to extricate himself
front a position in which, cut off from any
new source oJ supplies, he would be compell
ed to capitulate, or to light under tbe neces
sity of an overwhelming defeat.
There is no doaut that the enemy so tar has
managed his retreat with great spirit and
judgment, and that a? late as Tuesday even
ing the stand Le made near the Charles City
read was tbe occasion of a hard ab J critical
engagement. The ranks of the fugitive ene
my had maim-sined their organisation, and
were covering the rear of their retreat, with
a zeal teat mas . have been inspired either by
excellent discipline or extreme desperation.
Sluca the enemy has left his fortified camp
cr tha south side cf the Chickahominy, tak
ing ap his line of retreat towards the J imes
river, he has been favored by a country con-
sistiog of .dense wood and 3 vamp, which has
afforded him cover, and whiob ie ill adapted
for mi.itary operations. The difficulty hae
been to find the enemy in this intricate
c-uatry, which Is 60 favorable to his retreat.
THE BATTLE OT TUESDAY EVENING.
; We save some intelligence of tbe late bai-
tif; of Tuecd&y evening, which, deepiic the
i aictrust which yeeterd&y prevailed in ihe
j streets, shows that the enemy was again dis>
{ eomfittd atd pushed from the field of hattie,
snd tho: another addition was made to our
daily succession of victories, although pur
chased with difficultr and at great ccei of
life. RUN THE BLOCKADE

were not fully engaged an'll about 6 o’clock
iu the evening, from which hour until about
10 the battle raged with unexampled fury.—
Alagr-^ler’s division is reported to havo been
isrtifciy cut up, a portion of his command
hr.licit suffered in an attack made in very in»
adequate force on one of the enemy’s batte- ;
riec, whjch was supported by two heavy bri- j
zadeT. Jaoksou had succeeded, after s con j
fiict of several hoars, in taking all of the j
enemy’s batteries oo his front, consisting of
eighths guns, and the action closed with
our advance in r-r.gacsaion of the battle
field.
Oar loss is reported ic bs large, the onset

with unexpected spirit.
THE SITUATION YESTERDAY MORNING-THE EN
EMY WITHIN TWO MILES OF THU B1VKR.
Yesterday morning it was perceived that
the enemy had again progressed 3 short dis
tance ou the line of his retreat, and up to 21
o’clock 'here had been no renewal of the
fi^ht.
The situation, ao it then stood, represeafo
the enemy wit Mr. two miles cf ihe riter. and
that the sheila of hie gunboats were falling
within cur advance lines. A large number
of transports were in the river at different
point?; 3-song them the Vanderbilt, and i».
appear? to be probable that these forces are
a portic-n of Burnside's command. The ru
mors, however, of the enemy’s operation? on
the river are vague and contradictory.
The direction which' McClellan’s retreat ic
tbe river ha3 assumed is to Curl’s Neck, lit
tle north of City Point, on ihe opposite bank
of tbe river, and where a bend'ot the stream
makes a narrow ne^k of land- At the time of
ibis writing, however, we hear it stated * hat
ho has been driven below this point of con
tact with :he riTer, wkieh, if correct, will be
fortunate news.
THE MOVEMENTS OF YESTERDAY—THE MAIN
BODY OF THE ENEMY ENCLOSED BY CUR LINES
—DESPERATE SITUATION OF THE ENEMY.
We have accounts of the position of out
lines ye? erday, which we may recommend
to onr reader? as reliable, and which give the
important intelligence thai the m-in body of
the enemy’s forces has been cut off from the
river, and ha? again, been enveloped by onr
lines,
On Tuesday evening the saemy’s position,
when the eneagemeni took place, wp,g eoaih

tbe river in the direction o? Turkey I-;-

bis progress impeded by a swamp, had turn
ed towards Carl Neck, beyond which his col

landings higher up the river. From this di
