Silver Grey.
We have a communication from "Silver
Grey,' which we had hied to publish to-day,
but thought best to isy before our readers the
interesting correspondence from Stonewall
Jackson s command, and elsewhere. We shall
endeavor to publish it to-morrow. Every
reader of the Confederacy will be interested in
reading this letter of our old correspondent:
and we feci sure that many persons who tho't
hard of Lin for seme of his former articles,
will give him the eredit of being a patriot,
uninfluenced by captiousness in his former
criticisms.
Intervention.
The intervention humbuc* has exploded—
the bubbU burst—and we thank God it is no
longer to allure aud beguile our people with
fake hopes Wp have from the fir-t felt sure
it would turn to ashes upon onr lips if we
should ever be ;o far blinded and led astray a a
to place the least reliance upon it The news
papers and politicians of the North have in
dustriously put before the world every item
that looked the least like intervention, for no
other purpose than to induce us to rely upon
this broken stick—to come as near as possible
lying supinely, till they could thereby gam
some important advantage or bind us hand
and foot. We now have it in unmistakeahle
language from rhe speech of the Queen of Fug
land, and the debate in Parliament, that we are
to have no intervention. If an_) of our p
pie ever depended on it, they must now give
up that dependence. We must achieve our in
dependence bj’ our own power. This is amply
sufficient it it is properly used.
Yankee Actor*.
The Richmond Enquirer of the 1 Sth instant
Bays it has inlormation that a number of Van
kec actors from Yankeedom will arrive in that
city during the pre.-ent week, to make engage
meuts. We tru-t it will not be submitted to
anywhere Let the South be made too hot for
them—now, bi-ncef"/lh and forever.

The Editor of (lie Savannah News and
Ike Irish.
Messrs Editors :
In looking over the Savannah Ac s of the
30th ult , I notice the following : 1
“ In almost every paper we pick up wc see
a notice of some scoundrel who has been pass
ing counterfeit Confederate Treasury notes.—
As a general thing, they are paid out by Jews
and Irish who have been buying cotton at
enormously high prices, as well as provosions
of all kinds, and paying lor the same in this
counterfeit money, which they or their agents
buy from the Yankees at Nashville, Hunts
ville, and other places, for little or nothing.”
Surely this is very strong language, and ;
- weeping charge He says the Irish —meaning
all The noble an l enthusiastic editor men-
t'or.s a Jew firm in Columbus, Ga , who are
implicated in the above infamous charge ; but
he tails to give the name of any Irish firm
Columbus or any where else, that is guilty —
Now. as an honest and honorable man, he is
bonnd to do so, or retract the charge. It’s
wrong to confound the innocent with the
guilty.
The edit-.i is n t as weli posted in regard to
the price of cotton as he pretends to be, The
writer can inform him that the merchants in
almost all the towns on the line of railway
from Savannah to Atlanta have been paying
from 18 to 20 cents per pound for good cotten
for some time past
He also makes a Morgan dash at the facto
ries, and says most of them at least are a dis
grace to the State and a curse to the South. I
trust those factories are not all owned by the
Jews and Irish
In conclusion I sbali venture *- make the
editor cf the Neves a ptropo*' 1 '* 1011 J£ is tli * 3 :
If he can mention th- ' ia '™ of one Irishman
in the Comed*'-' c 6taies * vLj 1S guilty of the

has for some time been raging in America, has
unfortunately continued with unabated inten-

communications were unofficial. Correspon
dence had taken place between Messrs. Adams
and Seward, but the British government, re
plied as beforo. He stated that no communi
tion had been received from any foreign power
in relation to the recognition of the Southern
States
Lord Malmesbury suggested that the gov

favorable opportunity arose, to which Earl
Russell agreed, that, if mediation is offered, all
the other powers should join in it. The mo
tion calling for the correspondence was finally
withdrawn.
The London Times editorially argues that if

of peace be indefinitely postponed.

the herses in Kentucky to mount his cavalry.
Col. Miller, commanding the post, at Nash
ville, has issued an order to the planters In the
neighborhood impressing 1,000 negroes for

The Dispatch say* that rumors had reached
ilorthcrn Puliltc Senttim-nt.
Dr. F. H. Orme informs ns that he found
public sentiment at the N orlhmuch less unani
mous in favor of war than he expected ; and
that there was especially rising up in all parts
of the country a kind of anti-Lincoln party,
which condemned in emphatic terms the meas
ures lately adopted in the further prosecution
of the war, which is gradually and surely turn
ing into a war for the destruction of slavery,
and not for the restoration of tho Union —
When the war commenced, nearly all parlies
were enthusiastic iri its support, and rushed
into the ranks, locking solely to a restoration
of tho Union The people of the North—all
parties—had a blind idolatry of the Union,
except the old dyed-in-the-wool Abolitionists.
These have been opposed to the Union for
years, because it upheld slavery by its consti
tution and laws. These abolition fanatics arc
now In favor of the war, as the power of the
Government is being wielded for the destruc
tion of stavery
Dr. 0. found but few who were really friend
ly to the South and wished us success lie
saw a few of these, however ; but ho saw great
numbers who will not fight for, nor support
the war, as now waged, unless they are forced
to do so by the iron arm of arbitrary power.
If the successive step3 towards abolitionism,
and the prosecution cf the war on that basis,
are taken, (which are now certainly in the pro
gramme,) it will find the stoutest resistance
from a large number of the people—in some
places a majority, unless in the meantime they
are bound hand and foot in the chains of a
military despotism.
In Kentucky, ho found tho people ripe for
a union with the South at any sacrifice. They
aro ready to give up thc-ir property, go into
the ranks and fight Lincoln and the Union to
the death, and this they will do as soon as tho
first notes of deliverance are sounded in their
ears, if they give any enecuragcmciu to do so
with any prospect of making their power felt,
Kentucky has been deceived Her people
have Uvn gulled with the promise by Lincon,
that her neutrality should be respected. In
this way they were quieted, till their leaders
were bought up, and the people disarmed.
Their neutrality was then set at nought. They
are now only anxious to take up arms against
the base, treacherous government and the men
who have thus de-lifcera ! eiy lied to. deceived
and ruined them
This was the state of general public feeling
in the North and in Kentucky, a3 far as the
Doctor's observation extended, and from all
the information he could gather.

Ai.tt.aipt*d Assassination.
3a ‘rlonday night last, after Col. Lee, cur
Provost Marshal, had retired to his tent, a
young man named Kershaw, who had been
uader arrest for some days, but vzho had been
released that afternoon to make ready tor hit
departure yesterday morning with thei. y 1-n
Artillery, of which ha was a member, ap
proached the sentinel, saying that ho wanted
to see Col. Leo a moment, as ho was going to
leave next morning. The sentinel, not sus
pecting any fcttl play, allowed him to pass.—
He went into the Colonel’s tent, with a drawn
knife, and wa3 almost in the act of inflicting a
deadly stab, when the Colonel waked up, saw
how matters stood, and, with a well directed
blow of his fist, felled him (g the ground.
The young man is now inclose confinement.
Hi3 family are very respectable, and young
Kershaw is a good soldier when sober. He
has heretofore been in service. He was in the
battle of Manassas, at which he was taken
prisoner, carried to Washington, kept in th
old Capitol for some time, but was fiuaiiy re
leased and allowed to return home. He had
again joined the service in Capt. Holcombe’s
company. We sympathize with his family.
Look After your Negroes,
On Monday night three house girls cn Peach
tree street packed up their baggage and left
home. Two cf them were caught by the po
lice yesterday morning making an effort to
leave with the soldiers, ty some of whom they
said they Lai been enticed to leave. The
names of the soldiers implicated we deem it
prudent not to mention just now. It is hoped
they will be brought to justice and properly
dealt with, if guilty.
We advise everybody to lookaffcr their ser
vants, Lave good discipline, and but little vis-
ii-r.g in their lc-t3.
YYe intend in a few days to prepare an arti
cle on the negro question generally.
