uj. ElASWOBIEa REPORT IO COI MORGAN OF
HIS OPERATIONS AT GALLATIN
Hartsville, Tenn., August 15, i>*c2
HiN'i Jso. H. Morgan
Commanding Brigade, Sir:
On the merning of the 12th in3t,, when
within two miie3 of Gallatin I was ordered to
accompany the squad of men under command
vf Capt. Deahea, who were sent in for the pur
pose ot' taking Col. Econo prisoner, which was
accomplished by the gallant C&ptaiu in grand
style. 1 immediately proceeded to the Rail
road depot, where i understood tho telegraph
office wus, as well t3 the operator. I at once
bursted in the door and running up stairs f«mnd
tho operator in bed, staring into the barrel of
my six shooter. Ho surrendered and accom
panied me down stairs into the operating room
He soon mr.de me acquainted with the signals
f the line, &c,, when I tested the line and
found the wire 0. K. to Nashville and also to
Louisville This was about -LB* A. M., and
the office hour? are not until 7:30, therefore
between th ho rs of t and 7 there were no
operators in their offices on the line At 7:10
.he operator at Nashville, in th? depot office,
*allea me t.nd reported the train to Louisville
leaving cn lime, is also did the operator at
Franklin. 1 inf.-me! Capt McCann, who was
at the depot, about the time tho train from the
North would be at Gallatin He accordingly
made arrangements to take charge of the train
and no sooner had it arrived at the water tank
tbaa ho did s'
The trab- from Nashville wa now over due
l enquired of ;r. Nashville operator as fol

Bowling Grc n called m? and ac-aed me about

Bowling-Gee.n men ...lied N&skvillc. say-
,r.g; “Gallatin says No. 0 not arrived; have
you heard ficm it ?Nashville replied- “No:
they left on time.”

;f an enembetween Gallatin and Nashville*
Nashville to Bowling-Green—‘Nary rumor.
Nashville called me and informed me that
-be passenger train bound North had left on
.ime.
Inquiry after inquiry wa= made cf me as to
these two trains that ieft Nashville on time.
Everything p..-sed eff without euspicicn un
til 10 o’clock 45 minutes A. M , when Nash
ville commenced calling rue with a guatc sum-
.'•ent to induce me to believe that the trains
tad returned and our cccup allon of Gallatin
made known in Nashville; but I was cn the
«lert to counteract this report, and did not an-
iwer the Nashville operator until I could get
dr. Brooks, the Federal operator in the office,
that
who was under guard outside the office. I
required Mr. Brooks to answer all questions,
Knowing the Nashville operator would ask me
a question I conld not answer—something per-
taimng to past events.
Accordingly Mr. Brooks answered the call,
wnen the following conversation ensued :
Nashville to Gallatin—'“ What was the name
ot that young lady that you accompanied to
Major Foater’s ?"
Gallatin to Na9kviUe—“I don t remember of
going to Maj. F oster's with any young lady.
Nashville to Gallatin—“What about '
nitric acid I sent you the other day ?”
Gallatin to Nashville-“You sent me
n»tnc acid ■’
Nashville to Gallatin -“Mr Marshall, ihe
^ U .^ S i 1 V enclei ? t Railroads, is not yet
satisfied but that you are Morgan’s operator,
and he wishes you to tell him who you wished
to take your place whiie you were gone on
on leave of atscnca- how long you wished to
be gone, and when did you wish to go f”
Gallatin to Nashville—“Teil Mr. Marshall
i wished Mr. Clayton to take my place while I
got a week’s leave to go to Cincinnati.”
^1 informed Mr. Brooks, before I gave fain,
my place at the instrument, that I should lis
ten to Lis replies to any inquirias that might
be made of him, and I threatened to errry him
to Dixie, if the replies did not satisfy the
Nashville operator.
I am (as well as Mr. Brooksj, happy to say
that the Nashville operator was perfectly sat
isfied, and as the train bound South was now
at Gallatin waiting for tbp trains bound North
the Superintendent of the Road wished it to
move tc Edgefield (unction, and there meet
and pass the trains bound North, and acccrd-
cordingly he sent the following message
Nashville, August 12, 1662.
Tc Murphy, Conductor, Gallatin:
T ou will run to Edgefield Junction to meet
and pass trains No 4 and 6 and pass them
both at that point Answer how you under
stand B. MARSHALL
1 gave Murphy’s reply understanding the
order as above.
Nashville then sail Irvins 4 anu 6
loft at 11.16.”
During the afternoon Jispatcnes were pass
ing to and fro, but none of them in relation to
any enemy, and no suspicion was yet attached
to me being in the Gallatin office
The enemy, net knowing cf your wherea
bouts. the dispatches were of no benefit or in
terest to us. and I copied but few About 4
o'clock the Nashville operator called and in
formed me that they had positive information
of our occupation of Gallatin He said the
trains had returned the second time and had
brought reliable information beyond doubt:
and inquired what had become of Murphy and
bis train, but I gave him no satisfactory reply
About 5 o'clock I sent your dispatch, which
was as follows

as they can catch it on the street—green wood
