To Msj. Gen. Ualleck, General-in-Chief;
On Thursday morning the enemy crossed
the Rapidan, at Burnett’s Ford, in heavy forced
and advanced etrong on the road to Culpepper
and Madison Court House. I had established,
my whole leree on the turnpike between Cul
pepper an l Sperryville, ready to concentrate
at either place a* soon as the enemy’s plans
were developed
Early on Friday it became apparent that the;
move on Madison Court House wa9 merely a
feint, to detain the army corps of Gen. Siegeb
at Sperryville, and that the main attack of the,
enemy would be at Culpepper, to which placej na(e Qeneral Qf #he ftbolition -p

LETTER FROM AN OFFICER OF THE GEORGIA PAR
TISAN RANGERS TO HI3 FATHER IN ATLANTA.
Knoxville, August 19, 18C2
I>cnr Father:
On Monday, the 11th inst., the expedition
against Huntsville left here. It was composed
of a detachment of 200 men of Hunt’s Geor
gia Partisan Rangers, and Captains Nelson
and Ratcliff’s companies of Rangers, number
ing 110 men. These were joined on the march
by 600 infantry under Col. Grade. The mount

daylight on Thursday, the 1 Cth- have reached

defenders—they having no expectation of an
attack. But, unfortunately, wc had to move
slowly with the infantry. Rangers should
never be thu3 retarded. It destroys their use
fulness. The chief point of excellence in
mounted rangers'consists in their rapidity of
movement and execution. Where least expect

ask space for a brief statement
Gen. Prentiss did not deceive the Command-

to the movements of Gen. Buell’s army, or the
existence of extensive works at Pittsburg Land
ing. Gen. Beauregard had the current evi

rival was confidently expected. It was this
knowledge that led him on the night of the 8d
of April, at the late hour of 11 o’clock, tc send
me to Gen. Johnson to urge an immediate ad-

desire to have time to give the corps of Gen
Siegel all the rest possible after their forced
march, and to bring forward all the forces at
my disposal. The artillery of the enemy was
opened early in the afternoon; but ho made
no advance until nearly five o’clock, at which
time a few skirmishers were thrown forward
on each Bide under cover of the heavy wood in
wh ch his force was concealed. The enemy
pushed forward a strong force in the rear of
his skirmishers and Gen. Eanks advanced to
the attack.
The engagement did net fairly open until
after six o’clock, but for an hour and a half
was furious and unceasing. Throughout the
cannonading, which at first was desultory, and
directed mainly against the cavalry, I had con
tinued to receive reports from Gen. Banks that
no attack was apprehended, and that no con
siderable infantry force of the enemy had come
forward. Yet towards evening the increase in
the artillery firing having satisfied me an en
gagement was at hand, though the lateness of
tbo hour rendered It unlikely, I ordered Gen.
McDowell to advaGice Ricketts’division to sup
port Gen. Banks, and directed'Gen Siegel to
bring his men upon the ground as soon as pos
sible. I arrived personally on the field at 7
p m. and found the action raging furiously.’
Ihe infantry firing was incessant and severe.
I found Gen. Banks holding the position he
took up early in the morning. His losses were
