The Rut “ X."
For (he present we have quit notiiyiug dai-
:v subscribers <d the expiration of their sub
scription by sending the red “X.' Subscrip
tions are mostly by the quarter, and the time,
being short, will generally be remembered by
subscribers. As usual, papers will be discon
tinued at the end of subscriptions.
j o: these places there is also an abundant sup
ply of wood and water.
A fuither advantage would result from this
disposition of our forces. Should they be
needed at Richmond, Petersburg, or on the
of Bputh Carolina and Georgia, there
two direct to Richmond and down the Atfaif
ti.: coast, the other leading to Lynchburg and
around to Petersburg, or directly on to Knox
ville, Atlanta, Savauual^and Charleston.—
Still another portion oi the army will proba
bly be sent to a different point, which, for the
present, must be nameless.
The press and politici«ns of the United
States have been clamorous for an advance of
their army ever since the battle tf Sharps-
burg, and it is not improbable that McClel
lan, as soon as he hears of Lee’s withdrawal,
will order a forward movement, in the hope
of silencing their clamor and purchasing a
little cheap popularity. It is not probable,
however, that he will advance far from the
Potomac, or deceive anybody by so bold and
transparent a manoeuvre. He would he more
profitably engaged if he were to turn his at
tention to the Baltimore and Ohio railroad
and the Winchester branch, of which some
thirty miles of each have been completely de
stroyed by our forces. The iron, cross-ties,
bridges and station houses have all been
burned, blown up, .or otherwise rendered
wholly useless. ,
The question of foreign recognition and in
tervention continue to occupy the public mind
here. The opinion that this is our last cam
paign, and that the war will be brought to an
end in some way or other by next spring, is,
unfortunately, extending even to otttcinl cir-
cles. While there is reason to hope (here are
elements at work, both in the United States
and Europe, which may affect the character
and magnitude of the war, if they do not ter
minate it, it would, nevertheless, be a great
public calamity if the government should par
ticipate in the fond belief to the extent of al
lowing it to influence its conduct in any re
spect whatever.
The interest in the approaching Federal
elections has not suffered any abatement.—
Elections will be hold in the following States
on next Tuesday, the 4th inst., viz: N. York,
N. Jersey, Massachusetts, Michigan, Illinois,
Wisconsin, Minnesota and Delaware. Should
these States array themselves in opposition
to the present Administration, the result can
not fail to exercise a controlling influence
upon the fortunes of the war, but whether
for good or evil, it were impossible at this
early day to say. While it may be well
enough for us ndt to build any hope upon so
sandy a foundation as a Federal election, yet
the prevailing opinion here is, that the suc :
cess of the Democrats and conservative Whigs,
who are already denounced by their oppo
nents as “rebel sympathisers” and “seces
sionists,” would be followed by such wide
spread confusion and such bitter feuds and
divisions, as to preclude all idea of harmony
and energy in the future prosecution of the
war. P W. A

We were permitted to examine, a day or two
since, the subject of quile a novel surgical opes
ration performed, a lew days alier the battles

in charge of the 3d Alabama Hospital, in this
city. J. Y\ Wacaster, a member oi the First
North Carolina cavalry, received a severs gun-

which was drawn around and applied to die end
