Spirit of our Soldier*. There was au excited discussion iu the Hot»e just uow, between Messrs, -urlrell, Miles, Foote aud others, with reference to the.mode of dealing with deserters. Mr. Milos, as Chairman of the Committee on Mil itary affairs, proposed to huve them arrested by any person,'and to give a reward for their uppreliension. Mr. Gjtrlrell was iudiguant, and so was Mr. Foote, that a mean, thieving Jew, or other person, who from the beginit.g, has been speculating upon the necessities ol the ruiy, should uow be employed to arrest those, who, by accident or design, were absent from tbeit oommuuds- Mr. Miles responded that hit proposed legislation was for the protection of tho honest, brave soldiors, who never deserted their posts, who never shirked their duty His Bill was intended to protect the, very olass of soldiers so lauded by Messrs. Garircll aud others. . . Tho discussion was very animated, and in the gallery there were many soldiers. The House went into, secret .session, and as I left ihe floor with the crowd liom tho lobby, I overheard two wcather-bealeu vetraus from Lee’s army, oue a Texan, the other from North Carolina, in profound colloquy over the debate to which they had been listening. Texas loquitur—“Them felleis both loves us mightly, that smooths ta king one, (Miles,) aud that other chap what rared so over iu I ho corner, (Gartrell.”) North *Carolina—“I’m d—d et I knowed which of the two is the best teller; but there is one think I do know, of theyre afeard of breakin’ up Lee’s army they’ are 4*4 fools. Thar’s 6(1,000 of us gwiue t'o make a bee line for Mexico as soon as this war is over. Break up the army I or as them Congressers say, detnoralyze it h—11! Cau’t be did. We don’t never intend to quit, aud couldn’t live any where but iu camps ef we tried.” . Texas—“XUem’a my sentiments, we’ll eleet old ttaurnwrall, or ef he’s too pious we will have “Did Dad,” or some of them chaps of the true grit, aud when done with the Yan kees we’U have’a hand with Mexico, and the re«t of them savage nations.” Such was the substance of the soldier’s’ commentary Upon n debate wbicb has just closed, and which to say the least of it, was eminently calculated to do no gied. S. L. » . An t e’h is t <nfi c" M enY-?T1i e Charleston Courier sa^s: -• A work bas beep issued in France by Mr. Troyon, entitled “The Lacustrine Abodes of Man,” and devoted to the re mains and monuments of primitive occu pation near the lakes of Switzerland. 1 tie sites of twenty-six villages have been dis covered on the lake of N'-'iidiatei alone, twenty-four ott the lake <*. o neva, sixteen on lake Constance. Many'relics of human occupation, arts, etc., have been recovered, according to M. Troyon, proving that these villages now under the lakes, but formerly supposed to be bn or near the lakes, were founded and occupied by a race much smaller than any historic race of Europe. The relies prove that they were hunters and shepherds— remains of sheep, oxen and tTsmall species of horde are found. There are traces of cultivation of wheat, barley, apples, peas, etc, and iiax or hemp. TO SHIPPERS OP FREIGHT.
