Paulding Supkrior'Coubt, 1 Febrnai^ Term, 1868. j We, the Grand Jury, sworn, chosen and selected for the County of Paulding, beg leave id submit the following general Presfbt- menta: Through the proper Committees, we have examined the various books of the County Of ficers, except that of the Clerk of the Inferior Oourt, who ie absent, and whosB office is clos ed, and we find them neatly and eorrectly kept. We respectfully but earnestly call the attention of the Inferior Court to the.bad con dition of the Court House, especially to the leak at the nortnern chimney, and recommend such lepairs as the Court may think neces sary. By reference to the books of the County Treasurer, we find that einoe the last Term of this Court, he has received into his hand the sum of $419 25; that he has paid out the the smn of $415, and his commission being $4 35, leaves nothing in bis hands. The whole amount of the Sohool Fund received last year was $1714, deducting the Ordinary’s commissions, $85 70, left a remainder of $1628 30. Amount, paid out to insolvent chil dren is $1084 28, which leaves but $245 82 to be paid teachers by the parents of' solvent children, lacking but twenty-two and a-hslf per ceent. to be paid by parents. This result is certainly gratifying to the people of the county. We recommend t hat a tax of ten per cent, be assessed lor sohool purposes, for the present year. We would also call the attention of the Clerks and ot the Sheriff of this county to the necessity of keeping the doors of the Court House closed. Wo notice, with-pain the shame ful injuries committed on the building by per sons who are allowed to enter the jury rooms at pleasure. In view of the great scarcity of grain and other articles of food, the exorbitant prices, and the destitute condition of a great number of women aud children whose husbands and fathers have entered the service of our coun try, we most urgently recommend to the In ferior Court of this County not to grant any licenses to make or retbil any spirituous li quors distilled from grain ot any kind. ' This prohibition iB notouly a wise aud wholesomfi public policy, hut is dictated by the strongest feelings of sympathy for the families of those noble men «hj have sacrificed every thing in defense of our honor and our national rights. We would call the attention of the peopler of our connty to the brilliant military achieve ments of oar gallant army since the last Term of this Court, and cdngratulate them upon the encouraging prospects of mrr army and coun try generally. It is true that our enemy has a powerful and well equipped arpay in the Arid(And-thaidte is threatening to bring tho hori'ors of devastating war to our very doors, by laj ing waste our oities along the coast aud in tho West, but discontent bt,d despondency, and want of confidence, arc -.tiding them selves all through his arnij a- .m the North ern States, while we.are united and hopeful. With a firm reliance upon the skill and bra very of our Boldiers, the justice of our cause, and the assistance of a Divine Providence, we can but indulge the hope that at no distant day the cloi’ds of war shall be dispelled by the sun of psace, and our sons and brothers and husbands be restored to tho bosoms of the loved and grateful ones at h,ome. We tender to His Honor Judge Feather- stone, and to the Solicitor-General, B. D. Thomasson, our grateful acknowledgments for their kindness and courtesy to this body.
