A. Nbw Method or Amputation.—Dr.
Clta-ss»ignac, Surgeon to the Hospital Lari-
boislere, has published a paper in the med
ical journals on a new method of amputa-
tingflimbs without the aid of the knife.
For this purpose he uses what he calls a
caustic bracelet, consisting of a ring, round
which are placed little cbrystal cups, of a
rectangular form. The ring is applied to
the exact place wheie the amputation is to
take place; a pledget of lint, impregnated
with a solution perchlorride of iron at
thirty^five degrees, is placed above and
under the ring, and tne cups are then
charged with fragments of the Eithos
caustic The member to be amputated is
subjected to a considerable degree of com
pression, which removes some of the liq
uids of the body from the diseased part.
As the caustio proceeds in its action copious
bleeding might occur, to remedy which the
operator on his assistants exercise a digital
pressure on the principal artery^until^ the
operation is completed. There is consider
able difference in the behavior of a muscle
separated by the knife or by action of the
caustic. In the first case it contracts, and
a large interval is left between the two
parts that Lave been divided; but under
the action of the caustic the muscle does
not recede either way; Dr. Chassaignac
has tried his method twice in casta where
the patients were so feeble as to render
ordinary amputation extremely dangerous.
In both cases the operation was successful
The Bracelet in one case was applied five
times, for twelve hours each, before all the
soft parts could be eaten away by the caus
tic. As soon as the bone became apparent,
it was cut through by means of the ohain-
saw.—Oalignani.
We have seldom seen the wheat crop
present # more promising appearance, at this
season of the year than it does now. In go-
irg and returning from Milledgoville, by,
different routs, wo did not see a single sorry
field of wheat. If March will only be a little
kind and spare us a heavy frost, the proba
bility is wo shall have an abundant crop

The Blockade queitloui
The Supremo Court of Washington baa been
occupied several days iu considering, prize
ca^es arising from captures under the block
ade. The legal talent employed is of the first
ability, and tho importance of the question
raised has attracted a large attendance from
day to day. Tho parties before the Court are :
First, the United States Government; second,
the captors; and third, the claimants, who
were owners of the vessels and cargoes.—
There arc some half dozen different oases
which have bneu brought by appeal, from the
differi'-ut court*, where they are generally
tri« d, and though each case has its owu pecu
liar circumstances, yet, in all of-thou, two
grave questions aroraised, which are ojf gen
eral interest
First—Is tho goyeenmont engaged ip war,
in the sense in wbioh that term is understood,
to as tu bring it within th,e principles and
regulations which affect foreign pud qentral
nations iu their commercial dealings on sea.
Second—Whether the blockade declared to
exist off tbe Confederate ports has' been.es
tablished in such a manner as to make cap
tured vessels lawful prizes, subjeoted to .con
demnation in the admiralty oourts.
The property seized and in dispute, is most
ly owned by British subjects, and - they urge
that under tho Federal Constitution and laws]
no war has baen declared, and that, aooord-
ing to the laws of nations, war does Pot ex
ist. . They claim that the presont stale of
things is nothing but internal civil rebellion,
which gives no right to ihegovernment to.de
clare a blockade of a portion of iU own terri
tory, bo as to affect the rights of cititens of
other nations, who are Carrying on commeroe
with Ameaican citizens. By many at the
North it is thought the decision will'be ad
verse to the former policy of the Lincoln ad
ministration, except as to the articles clearly
contraband of war, such as muaitrotas,i arms,
ala.—Memphis Appeal 26th Feb.

Wo are all how encamped on a very dry oak

from this, located in aplne swamp, where we
were almost up to our eyes-in mud and water.
A few nights ago, when on our march to this
locality, wc wore filed out into the woods for
camp Soon we gathered pine tops and spread
upou the ground, on which .laid onr wearied
limbs, and covering with our blankets, slept
soundly pud dreamed sweetly, while- a very
heavy snow fell, which burled us all, and the
weight of which awoke mosf of us about 3, a.

was to be perfectly still till diiy, which we
