her course to tbe. northward and westward,

anticipating she would aoon be within range
of her guns, and followed her with varying

Queen’s channel, the tougue of the ocean and
Northeast Providence channel, one hundred
and twenty fire miles to sea, losing Bight of
her on Monday night
There is no doubt but that the speed of the
Florida under steam is exaggerated; for
while, the wind was light and the sea smooth,
the Sonoma gained gradually but surely upon
her. Upon getting, however, into the open
sea and the wind froshing and the waves in
creasing theYlorhKraiidly drew away, un

Copperheads attempted to stave off Sumnet’s

bill in the House, he denounced it in such terms
that he was ordered by the Speaker to resume
his seat. He did not sit down until he remarked
that the people and the army would not conseut

A Good Hotel Story. *. i .
Many good things have been told of Dr.
Thompson, the world-renowned humorist and
hospitable proprietor pf tho Atlanta Hotel,'
whose ready wit but few are.willing to encoun

week which rather worsted the Docto*.-
A Lieut. Colonel who was-wounded at Mur

him, on the 20th day called for his bill. The
obliging clerk halffied him the document with
20 days multiplied by $1 .The Colonel scan
ned .the bill, and observed its footing up—
$80. He turned to. the Doctor, who was pre
sent, and asked him if he did not think that
pretty heavy. The Doctor, with that peculiar
toss of the head whioh indicates, a small whirl
wind, said : “No; if yon had to pay four dpi
lars for a gobbler-, onff dollar- a dozen for
eggs, four dollars a ponnd for Rio coffee, one
dollar twenty-fivo cents for butter, fifteen dol
lars a bushel for potatoes, and five dollars a
pair for shad, you’d think it,waa light
The Colonel ran his eye over has bill again
and quietly replied : “YVeJl, 1 have been here
twenty days, and d—n % the article you have
mentioned have I Been on your table.”
It is said the Doctor rushed out into tho
back yard and did not cool, off till be had

L»t«»t from tlie Ogeeckee—Departure of
tile Irou-cluds.
We have official information from tho lowest
point on the Ogeechee from which observa
tions can be taken, np to 9 o’clock, a. m*, yes
terday. Thero was. not an iron-clod in sight,
all having weighed anchor and put to sea.—
The mortar boats were under fall sail, beating
their way ont to sea against the tide.
About 7 o’clock*«L^mall side-wheel steamer,
supposed to be a mall boat carrying dispatch
es, went np Bear river and stopped for a few
moments alongside two small mortar boats,
which were then anchored ih tho stream.
. Early yesterday morning drams were heard
beating on Ossabaw Island, -also several vol
leys of musketry and the reports of four hea
vy guns in the same direction. The circum
stance suggests the idea ol a funeral, and we
may not be far wrong in supposing that the
rites were celebrated over the remains of an
officer of 'the Montauk, wbp was wounded in
the engagement of Tuesday by our sharp
shooters.
Well, what do all these movements mean?
Is the enemy discouraged by his experiments
with the iron-clads ? Ono thing is certain:—
our Georgia boys have lost all dread of iron
clad fleets, and, mistaken or not, they are
willing to give them a‘brush whenever they
may feel theret o inclined.—Sav. Rep. tth. ■

f ■ Joking the Governor.
On Thursday lost Governor Brown left this
city for Maoon, alone iff the Superintendent's
car froth the State Road, which was attached to
the Macon train- Some distance below Grif-
fin—-probably on down grade—the Governor’s^
oar became detaohedjfrom the train, and was
left some ton miles in the rear before the ac-
cidejit waB discovered. On\tbe train return
ing to hitch on again, th'e coupling’could not'
be found, and a. pair of trace chains from a
farm near by yielded to the exigency, and
the Governor was thus enabled to go on his
way —reflecting. On arriving at the Maoon
depot, the boys pronounced the Governor a
heavy man.

motives, have advpcated a reconstruction of
tho Union—are willing to shake hands with
our oppressors over the graves <*£ our mur-*,
dered countrymen, and bow the, suppliant
knee to an enemymwho are seeking to deprive
qb of all that is near to a brave-and chivalrio
people: ,
Therefore Resolved, That wo regard any at
tempt at the present time to offer terms to. our
enemy as calculated to weaken our cause, pro
tract the war and lull our people into a false
—a. perhaps fatal security; and any person,:
