House,largely engaged in commercial trans
actions with the Confederate States, knew
that the capture of Charleston would effect
ually end all trade, and hence their sympa
thies were increased by the laudable incent
ive of seif-interest. The action takon by the
Manchester house, was of the most effeoiive
kind. Four splendid steam engines for gun
boats would have giveu such increased motive
power to our Charleston gunboats, that in
any future oollision with a Federal vessel
there would have been no escape, as in the
the odso of the Mercedila.
If tho Captain of the P/incess Royal had
destroyed the ship, tho Confederate govern

but this he would not do because he knew

in proportion. 1 have advertised we will pay
thirty-five cents per stick, for first class ties
of oak, which in ordinary times would be a
remunerative price. The timber is oh the
rout and overlooking the road bed fur the
most of the way, and we only lack a few men
to take the contracts, and lay the axo at the
root of the trees. All those ties can be Jet

for this service. I have assurances to this
effect, ami how oau sixty men be of more

Fourth—There are saw mills alon^ the
line, nearly all of .whioh are shut down, be
cause their owners are awny in the army,
which would immediately go to work for us,
if the above suggestions are answerod. This
is a very quiet way of doing the war—but
this would have been,' and will yet be an im

But here is where the money goes, my white
friend, to pay for a negro war. Bend to your
task, put your shoulder to the wheel, work
till your heart sweats blood. Water the earth
like dew, with the big drops that roll from
your toil-wrinkled brow; your fate is, to be
taxed enormously for a nigger war; and pay
besides, thousands of millions for nigger free
dom. Who allotted this task, my honest
responsibility. Taxation is slavery—debt is
slavery. Abraham Lincoln enslaves the white
man for the purpose of imposing so-called
“freedom” noon the negro. Abraham Lin
coln degrades his own race by lifting up the
negro to its level, and yoke not only the pres
ent generation, but tfle future into a more
galling servilale than ever enrsed the Cauca
sian race sinee Adam’s time.
