Retiring ofthe kind. How could wo “defend
him,” when no charge had been made against
him ? Whence this apparent effort im the part
of two newspapers in Georgia to assign ns a
position in relation to this Thatter which we
have not assumed? ~
We were informed of Gen. Toombs’resigna
tion by an old acquaintance who barely men
tioned it in less tj.an two lines - of a privat e
letter written from Richmond. We simply
made a newB item of it, and expressed the
hope that the people would, as soon a$ possi
ble, call hiqi into the counsels of the country
wiiero his unrivaled abilities and information
would bo useful t o ns at-this dime, when such
qualifications are 8pmuoh needed; and forth
with the'Savanuah News rebuked ns for get-
tiug up a quarrel about who should be Gov
ernor, and the Enquirer says we have defended
him'. - • _ .....
We notice that the Chronicle <j - Sentinel so
far approved of our remarks as to copy-them,
and the Constitutionalist uses the following
language:
The eminent abilities of Gen. Toombs should
not be lost to his State and country, and we
trast that ho will be soon in a position where
his enlarged and statesmanlike qualifications
will bp brought into full play.
Wonder if the News will charge these two
journals with qua 1 reling about who shall be
Governor? and will tlip Enquirer say they are
defending him ? ...

We.have seen a counterfeit 20-oent change
bill on the Back of Fulton, whioh has been
passed in this oily. It reads as follows :
BANK OF FULTON ‘ 9(rt
Will Pay
TWENTY CENTS
To Bearer on demand, in Codfederate Treas
ury Notes, when the sum of Five Hollars is
presented.,
Fur Cash’r.
Atlanta, Jau’y 1st, 186& - ..
The signature is a most awkwardly execu
ted attempt at Austoll. The word* “Bank”
and “Fulton,” in the 'top line, are in great
primer, ornamented, No. 8. The No'“20” is
in great primer Gothic condensed, No. 8.—
The Hardline, “Twenty.Cents,” is in two-line
pica ornamented No 13. The border on the
left hand end is styled, “New Combination
Border No. 3.6 " This border is aneatly flow
ered print f of an inoh wide,- and extends
across the full widihj of tie bill. Only one
color of ink, black, is used! The paper is
coarse and of very interior quality. A plain
double rule completes the marginal border on
all sides. !_ .1... »
The genuine reads as follows: .
