woen they commenced negotiations with the

topics disCttrB-d ; but it was not until the 24th
of December, 1814, that the Treaty of Pea e

and on the same day wak notified by the Sec

From the leader of mediation to tbe cou-Ju-

ty two months had elapsed. We are inclined
to believe, from tho complication of top es,
whether actually pertinent or otherwise, that
a treaty of peace between the United S tiles
and the Coufe lerute States would progress
quite slowly, occupying perhaps uot less than
six mouths iu the inteicbahge oi diplomatic

meantime an armistice may or jfiay not be
agreed upon. At all events, the urm>es will
remain in tbe field ready to renew tue fight
