A Question or Veracity.—A letter from
an authentic source says that the officers
ol the English war vessel, which came to
Norfolk from Charleston, after the late
naval fight with the blockaders, wore very
indignant at the denial of their atatemenia
us to the result of that fight by tbe Federal
officers. They affirm that the blockade
mn raised ; that tbe Yankee fleet fled out
of sight, abandoning not only the field of
strife, but the horizon itaelf. It is said that
some of the officers went to Washington
to confer with Lord Lyons upon the sub
ject. *

Supreme Court. •
The Senate yesterday passed, by a large
minority, the bill to repeal those clauses in
the judiciary net, which would have opera
ted to confer an appellate jurisdiction on
the Supreme Court of the Confederate
•St.ties over the Courts of the States respec
tively. This repeal has been, os we think,
wisely made; and the only genuine and
safe basis of the Confederacy—nnmtely
State Sovereignty, thereby lifedliigh above
all danger of question, The bill now goes
to the House, where we hope to see it
passed by as great a majority.—Richmond

Richmond, March 23.—In the Senate a report

ence on the subject of regulating impressments
ol private property for the use of tbe army. It
provides that if proporty belonging no producers
is impressed, it shall be appraised by two diems
tereeted citizens who shall award just compen
sation. It further provides for ihc appointment
of two Commissioners in each State—one by
the President, and the other by the Governor,
who shall fix schedules of priceo every two
j months or oltener, which shall regulate the
‘ amounts to bo paid for property impreseed in

It is richly worth the price of subscription—

iy*The accounts from Port Hudson at
the late bombardment, when the Hartford and
Monongthala, Yankee war vessels, passed np
the river in spite of our batteries, were that
«hey were so much crippled as to be inoapa-
b'.e of doing any harm. It then occurred to
the mind of every reader, that, however much
thoy were damaged, they were nevertheless
able to stem the boiling torrent of the Mis
sissippi. To-day wo have nows by telegraph
that they have successfully pa>aed our batte
ries at Warrenton, and are now anchored at
the mouth of the Yankee canal. Whether
they have destroyed the Queen of the West,
the M’eiA, and the Indianola, we are not in
formed.
Mobile, March 23.—The Appeal of the 21ei
says the packet stesufer Natchez, with 1300
bales of cotiou was destroyed by fire an the 13th
faat., on her trip up the Y&soo.
The Hartford and Aionongehnla were allowed
to approach within 400 yards ol our batteries at
Grand Gull, when tiiey were opened upon, the
vessels replying with broadBiedes several times
repeated. A dozen shots struck the vessels and
parties were seen carrying the wounded below.
.No damage on our side.
The Natchez Courier says the Hartford, the
federal flag ship, with Commodore Farragut ou
board, anctiored in front of tho city on Tuesday
afternoon, the 16ih, and sent a small boat with a
ting of truce ashore, with a note to the Mayor,
staling that il the U. S. boats were fired on by
the citizens of Natchez or guerillas, he would
bombard .he city. The Hanford remained all
night, and left with the Monongehsla next
morning.
A special to the Appeal, from Grenada tbe
10th, say a dispatch to the Memphis Argue from
Vicksburg tne 13th, says that 25 rebels were
captured while tearing out the levee above the
canal.
The Bayou Macon is pronounced unnavigable
on account of snagB. One Yankee division left
Memphis Tuesday last the 13th, in light draft
steamers, bound lor the Yazoo Pass. The river
was falling at Memphis, also in the upper tribu
taiies.

FROM OUR SECOND EDITION OF YESTERDAY
The Ne»<tjr 'Women or our City.
Yesterday afterno m Marshal Williford called
at our office and •> tubiiid t» u* » list.of 233
names of women «ti *■ malts iH-umas are in
the war, who had- emu- ... waul ..ml rej/isiored
their names as 1 h**> ••• »iif ! .oat..-. Marsh
al Wlilifordhad di«> . i.. vs.-., risesii the unm
of $1132 50 which hu lsa.f... ’.i.i-sl by voluntary
contributions from ourcitizes.s. fie conld point
out no name on this list who was not worthy of
any donation that charity might prompt. This
list is not composed of the eeizert who were
helping themselves last Wednesday.
The Manhal further informed us that he had
ascertained that the tall female with determina
tion ia her eye, and who liad elicited bo. much
sympathy as tho “boss” of the seizing crowd
is the wife of a shoe-maker in this city who had
not been to the army and is receiving very high
wages for his labor, and in comfortable circum
stances ; and further, that none of the ringlead
era of that crowd would give their names, or
was, from ail he could learn, worthy of parties,
pating in tne fund he had raised.
The Marshal further says that we have many
poor women in the city who need'liberal charity.
The majority of them work hard but do not earn
enough to meet their necesiaiy wants. When
we remember that Fulton county has sent over
4000 men to the army, this list is small and ha8
the strongest clams upon those who are able to
contribute to their wants.
The State the County and the city authori
ties have made liberal appropriations to meet
the wants of the families and ot.all persons who
are not able to mnke a suppoit. Some who are
entitled to the benefits of these donations have
not let their wants be as well known as they
dhould; and we here say, that if the wives,
mothers, or female relatives of our soldiers*are
needy and will only lot their wants be known—
if tbey will go to the Clerk of the Council and
register their names and place of residence their
wants will be supplied. We say here what we
know, that tlere an not ten men in Atlanta who
will not chcerfi lly divide their jneans with the
famllies'of soldiers 0ho are in want.
There is no need of any woman—no matter
who nor what her condition—seizing a lew arti
cles from poor shop keepers who sell by retail,
whose profits are small, and who have families
to support. Let them come openly to the proper
officers and mike their wants known, and we
venture that by this sensible course all their
wants will be supplied at once and cheerfully,
by State, county and cgty authorities, aa well as
by private charity.

A Veuerable Patriot.
lYe have before ua a letter writteu by a ster
ling old patriot, over 68 years of age, in whloh
he announces his determination to go into the
service in a few days He whs in service in
the war of 1812, and later in the Indian wars
and again in the Mexican war, through which
he served as a Captain, and has been twioe in
servieo during this war, and now is going
again. lYe give tho following extract from
this admirable lettor, which ia written In a
very fair hand for a man of his ago and hab
its. It is dated the 18:h inst. He say*
“ 1 was discharged from the Army of Vir
ginia on the 22d of last December, in conse
quence of an ulcer on my left fool. My foot
is now well, anil 1 am making arrangements to
go into tho anny again in a few days, and
will do soi if not providentially hindered.—
Iam in my 69„h your since 24th October last.
Many will, perhaps, say 1 am a foolish old
man, and that I am not able to fight, or maroh,
or stand the fatigues of a soldier I am but
recently from the army, and never had to
leave the ranks a single day for sickness.—
Before 1 obtained my discharge, I was told by
the Surgeon that 1 would have to ask it on
the ground of disability. I told him I would
not; that I was fully able to servo my coun
try every way except my uloeraied foot; and I
was. That ie now well, and I am as well ev
ery other way, as I wsb then.
*• I left my home lost August was a year
ago, for the army in Virginia. Bfeore leav
ing, I often felt like I ought to stay at homo
on account of my age, but I could not be sat
isfied. This thought did not content me; and
I now have the same feelings and am in the
same condition. I am going.
“To all my friends aud to my brother sol
diers, 1 oan say that I act from pure motives,
and as a patriot, to be true to my beloved coun
try- Ioannot more than lose my life in the ser
vice j and to be conquered by our foes is worse
than death. What . 6 uld wo expect from the
thieving*, revengeful, blood-thirsty .Yankees, it
they triumph 1 Every indignity and tyran
nical oppression would be heaped upon us
and we would be crushed and ground rt> the
earth under their iron-hen!, Our property
wou.d figWfi^scmarttrxmy their puuiLl agBt.
We would be disarmed—would not have a
shot gun left with which to kill a squirrel
around onr - oornfields. Wo wo. Id be treat
ed with more cruelty and disrespeot than
any cruel overseer (and there are seme such
in the South, of course,) ever did his negroes
on a plantation. From their conduct hereto
fore, we might expect the most hellish outra
ges upon our mo.her?, wivqs, sisters and
daughters, which, if we should resent, we
oould expect nothing -but to be put to death,
perhaps after a sham trial. 1 hope all will
took ahead and think for a moment how awful
our situation will be unless we beat back our
enemies, and then all, both young aud old,
that are able, to handle a musket, eay at once,
“ I will take the field of bat'ie »nd wallow in
my gore and blood before my eves shall wit
ness such inhuman brutality and degradation.”
I will answer for myseif: Although I am old
and have been five limes in service—first
when a beardless boy, and last, when a grey
headed old man, yet I will go again; and I
will stand in the ranks and fight for my coun
try’s rights, honor and independence, till some
ball Tays my aged head low with the slain.
“And I snail not go without muoh to oheer
and comfort mo. I shall trust in that Divine
Providenoe that h&s at all times saved me.
I have been in two of tho greatest battles of
this war, and I am thankful to say that I
have never been wounded. '
Some of my friends are trying to diseuade
mo from going on aocount of my ago, but
Providence permitting I have reaolvod fo go.
and some are urging me that if I will go, .’
had better go as a substitute, and thus mat 1 *
some money in my old age. I feel under m "
ny obligations to my friends for their ki
feelings towards me. I have nover beensed
substitute, and have never been drafted. 1
have at all times thought enough of my coun
try and had its welfare at heart, to go into-
tha army a's a volunteer. * It may be that ex
ception would be taken to my age, if I were of-
ered as a substitute; for although I know I am
able to perform the dutio3 of a soldier (it is
a subject that I knew more about than other
people,) others might not think so. I have
properly considered this matter, and have
come to the conclusion that I would be will
ing to take the place of some person who is
not physically able to fill his own place. I
don’t wish to take an able bodied man out of
the army or save one from going in it. In
such a case, I should feel that I would be do
ing as much harm &3 good.
“It is true I need money as my means are
rather short, and no one can make money in
the army at $11 a month. I am almost a
stranger here, but I will not ask any one for
assistance. I am a citizen of Texas, but a
native of South Carolina. I was bom and
brought np in that State and resided there
till I was 41 years of age.
Yours truly,
* JOHN TRUSSELL
