Rapidity of licomotion is a quality that
seems to be denied to this ekpeditiou. We
are now on our fourteenth day from Helena,
and have made in all about sixty miles. There
is this consolation left us, however, in the
contemplation of this progress. We have
overcome the difficult part of our route.—

servo to be forever remembered as the most
difficult water courses through whicji a steam
b'>at expedition ever attempted to pass.—
Stern-wheel steamboats—of which this expe
dition is almost exclusively oompoaed—lifcve
tho advantage "of being narrow, with theii
wheels so placed that trees, and other obstac
les on the banks oaunot injure them, unless
the vessel is backing; but, in other respects
they are the most complete nuisance that
were ever set afloat. The least puff of wind
throws them about as if they were mere
straws. They are very difficult to manage in
all respects, having a notorious perversity for
going just where and how they please. This
has been tho great drawback to cur progress.
The streams have been so narrow and so per-
plexingly crooked, with such sharp bends and
and turns, that the vessels were constantly
leaving tho channel on short expeditions in ‘
land. On every such occasion, some portion
of the vessels would be left hanging upon the
timber as mementoes of the trip. When to
theso incidents is added the trouble of towing
three coal barges, the cause of our slow ad
vrmco will bent once apprehended.
But, happily, we are past these troubles. The
Tailahetchie river, which we entered last night,
is a much broader stream.that the Coldwater or
the Yazoo Pass, besides having cleared banks,
so that vessels can run along at a moderate rate
of speed, without the danger of being tomato
pieces should an unlucky wind blow them on to
a lee snore. It baa been navigated by steamers
ever since steamers have been known on the
Western rivers. It is formed by the conflrunee
of the Coldwater and Little Taliahathie rivers,
and Tuns southeasterly for a distance of one
hundred and sixty miles, where it forms the
Yailabusha river, and forms the Yazoo. Its
course is winding and. crooked, like all the
sou’hern streams; but its banks aregradual and
wide, and comparatively easv to bo turned by
Steamers under ordinary headway. It leads
through the most fertile and productive region
of the State of Mississippi. Its banks are lined
with well cultivated plantations, on which cow
ton grows in abundauce. The average annual
yield of this staple, oh the lands watered by the
Tallahatchie,is not less than seventy five thous
and oales. : ' ' '
Oar advent into these waters seems to have
been anticipated for some weeks; yet we
have met with no serious opposition-from the
enemy as yet. We gather indications, how
ever, at nearly every step, that preparations
aro making to receiVo us lower down the
country. Previous to our coming into the
river, the rebels had sent boats up to the
head-waters of this stream, levying contribu
tions of cotton to build breast-works with —
The location of tho cotton forts thus.bailt is
is not sd readily ascertained. Accouots are
very conflicting- Some roports say that we
wili find them at Greenwood, on Yazio river,
four miles below its head; while others per
sht in saying that we shall meet with no ob
stacles until we reached Yazoo City. All
that we know definitely is, that we have
met with no enemy as jet Not a shot has
been fired at any boat of the fleet Not
guerilla lies shown. hiauelf at one point.—
Sal even a rebel seoui or picket has been dis
covered sinee the expedition left the Missis
sippi river. This may be alt a part of a very
nicely conceived and arranged plan to lure
its oa as far into the interior and away from
reinforoements ss possible, with the expecta
tion of then making mince meat of us ail, or
taking us, in one grand body, prisoners of
war; hut the fict/nevertheless, exists, that
we have moved through a region that seems
to have known nothing of war before, and lo
have had no apprehensions that the dreadful
scourge ’would ever he brought to its own
midst. »e Lave seen, wh»t i have noticed
nowhere else in the South, plantations teeming
with iifrf and labor; tha planter, with his
family, enjoying the quiet of his own domes
tic hearth, with his colony of blacks indostri
ously outraged planting and cultivating his
fields. None have fled, as those in other re -'
gion* have fled, to leave their homes a prey to
pillaging soldiers. We have had a fair peep
at the South aa it was. And I must say tho
view has been a charming one. The sun haa
shone out gloriously, revealing orchards in
full bloom; vegetation in its most splendid
green apparel; fields in process of tillage for
the early snmmer’s crop; peace and happi
ness on evory hand, with their conoomitants
of labor and apparent prosperity, while war
and its ravages were unknown
But I have seen some hatd sights, too. I saw
zealous officer arrest ouo of these peaceful
citizens, without cause or pretence, and drag
him $way from liis home as a prisoner of-war.
Thrf u days afterwards this man was released by
the ’order of a superior officer, and hastened
back to what had been his peaceful,happy home;
but, ffiaa, how changed ! A home nalonger.—
During his ehort absence his only child had died;
his wife had fled in terror, no one knew whither;
and unprincipled soldiers had stripped his house
of itaconterits, destroying wantonly what they
could not carry away as plunder. Such is wan
Let those who assume to justify an indiscrimi
Hale and exterminating warfare, and at the
same time raise their hands in pious horror at
the exaggerated accounts of guerilla operation^
contemplate this picture. Let them put them
selves in this man's place, and tell mo that they
would not be fired with an implacable hatred of
everything and everybody northern ! This is
the way we are augmenting the Southern army,
and swelling the lawless guerilla bands that an-,
noy us so much. That man, if he ho a natural
Southerner, will never allow-an opportunity to
pass ol shooting at any one who wears tho liv
ery ot those who killed his child, robbed him of
his wife, and destroyed his hone. He would be
more litaa n man should he quietly submit to
such an outrage with-no attempt at revenge.
I should say,.in this connection, that tbecom
mander ol this expeditiondo not recouized such
acts as these. On tho contrary, they are putting
forth every exertion to restrain their men. But
the education ol our soldiers has been bad. and
it will break out and manifest itself at limes,
despite tlie strongest effort to suppress it.
Although, as I mentioned above, tho enemy
have been gathering cotton on the banks of
this river for fortifications farther down, they
have by no moans secured all there is. The
country is full of ootton. Mueh cf it is piled
away in gin housos, as though a fear of cot
ton burners had never possessed tbe people.
Indeed, I do not believe they have ever had
any organized ootton-burners throughout this
region, any more than they have had organis
ed guerillars. The whole region-seems to
have been very little, if any, disturbed by the

neighbors say he was the li

hundred and fifty, bales hid away lit piece of
thick woods near to the riveF bank. We
were wanting some cotton just then, and ao
we made free with this pile, whioh laid so
handy. The parson begged most piteously to
be dealt with mildly. He asserted that, a few
months ago, Gen. Hovey visited his place
while on his march to Grenada, and his sol
diers destroyed about $20,000 - worth of pro
perty for him. It was too bad, he said, to
piok out one man, to be so hard upon. If we
would only go about six miles farther down
tho river,.we would come to a plantation
where about four hundred bales were to be had.
The parson was very ready to toll on his
neighbors, and very anxious to be spared him
self. We did spare himi after taking about
one hundred bales, which was all we needed
at that particular. time. Other boats of the
fleet finished his pile.'
Our light-draught guuboats are now being
fixed up with cotton in such a way as to be al
most a* impregnable as the regular iron clads.
They will be able to go up with quito' a formal*-
able battery without any particular danger to
their vulnerable parts. Their boilers and ma-
chinery wiU be ao.surrounded with cotton bales
that it will b£ almost imposeiole to penetrate
them with a cannon ball. Yesterday and.to-day
have been mainly occupied in this work and in
coaling. We aro now lying but ten miles below
themouthoi the Coldwater, but shall be ready
to start forward in the morning, when having a
good river, and being fully in readiness to meet
the enemy, we shall move more rapidly than we
have been doing. 1 anticipate that two, days, or
three at most, will brinrr us to Greenwood.

witness was the daughter of the parties,
who wa3 thirteen years of age when the

ical experts who made a post mortem ex
amination also testified on the trial. The
Jury returned a verdict of guilty, and the
prisoner was sentenced by the Court to
imprisonment few life in tbe Penitentiary,
