Off for Charlhbion.—The Augusta Vol
unteers, Capt. Geo. T. Jackson, left here for
Charleston by the evening train yesterday.
They numbered forty-five rank and file, and
are going where there will probably be imme
diate active service for them. We have no
fears that they will do otherwise than acquit
themselves honorably and bravoly.' Success

Anothf.r Plot Fte Deliverance Foiled.
—Yesterday morning, about four o’clock, a
scheme for the escape of twenty-seven of the
professional desperadoes confined in the East
ern District mililarj j.risen, was set in mo
tion, but through the vigilance and gallantry
of a detachment of tho Richmond Blues, on
guard at the prison, tho attempt was foiled.
The parties having out a hole through the
wooden partition of the spaoiou3 apartment in
whioh they were confined, gained acceis to a
stair-way leading to an alley in the rear,
through which it was '.heir purpose to escape.
Five of them were sent forward as an ad
vance, to watch their opportunity and ecoure
the sentinel on duty at the po3t they were to
surprise. Tbe sentinel seeing them approaoh,
and suspecting their design, alarmed the
guard, and in a moment every man was on
the spot wiih fixed bayonets, at a charge,
advancing upon the crowd; when several
among the desperadoes cried out “stop ! stop 1
we surrender ! we surrender 1” They were
immediately .taken in charge again and re
turned to their confinement, when the details
of the plot were ascertained. Afelluw named
Buroh,' notorious for brute courage, was the
ring-leader of the plot.— Rick. Enquirer, 6th.

We learn with regret that the wise and pru
dent order of Col. Lee, prohibiting the retail
of liquor in the qity has been revoked by Gen.
John K. Jackson, who ranks Col. Lee at this
point.
It is a sad misfortune for the city to be
under the rule of those who do not feel the
loia! interest; or regard the general sentiments
of the-people tuffloiently, to continue in force
a regulation whioh has worked so much to
their satisfaction ; for we feel confident that
there is not one iu fifty of the citizens who
will not regret this aet. It is remarkable, loo,
that friendship for the soldiers should be so
far lost, as (o turn loose their worst enemy in
their midst. The bar rooms are thrown open
and now whiskey and Jilood will flow freely.

For several evenings past Messrs. C. H.
Erwin k Co., with their new Dramatic oorps,
have been entertaining large assemblies at
the Alhenarum. Their protracted sojourn with
the people of Montgomery, and their flatter

Theatrical company. We shall have occasion
to speak more specifically- of them as oppor

us.
