food Supply.
We bad a call yesterday from a very intelli
gent gentleman (Rot. N. N. Sarising) living in
the neighborhood of Artesia, who informs us
that the wheat crop of Middle illksissippi is
in a very promising condition. A muoh great
er amount than usual is in the ground, and
the early rust has entirely disappeared. There
is nothing, except some calamity not to be an
ticipated, that oan now prevent the crop from
being not only very plentiful, but also of the
best quality. The recent cold spell was of
decided advantage to It.
It is too early to predict in relation to the
corn orop. We have, however, the assuranoe
that an unusually large quantity of it has been
planted, and as yet nothing has occurred to
mar the prospect of universally good har-
vesta. •;
To the cultivation of these grains and oats,
nearly all the land is devoted. Of cotton
hardly more has been pat in the ground than
will supply the seed for next year’s planting.
The oountry, Mr. S informs us, is fall of
food, both bresdstuffs and meat, and we
conld get plenty of it if the communication
by railroad were not meddled with by milita
ry authority. Millions of bushel* of corn
might be gathered up at $1 25 to $1 60 per
bashed, and hundreds of thousands of pounds
of meat oan be had at forty to fifty cents per
pound.
jfcThe spirit of the planters of Mississippi in re
lation to the war is ol the most patriotic chai-
acter. They are willing to adopt any a agna
tion that will be of benefit to the cause. Im
pressment laws are not necessary, and instead
of accomplishing tl e purpose for which they are
made, are only an obstacle to it- All that is
necesonry i3 that the wauts of onr army and
commissaris should be made known. Patriot-,
ism will do tbe rest. Tbe impressment—as ihei
law, or no law, for it is enforced—only hurts
the eeiinge oi those who have food to spare;
and produces indifference, instead of alacrity,
n tbe disposition to furnish it. -Gen. Pem
berton, however, we suppose, has learned tbiiL
as we infer from the statements of the.J-ckson
papers, which assure ns that supplies in abin
dance are voluntarily offered for the uses of tbs
army at Vicksburg.—Mobile Tribune.
